Produce a witty and clever tutorial pilot video about the Lawn Mower 3.0 trimmer for a chance to create a tutorial series for Manscaped that entertains and explains all of its products.

It's time to rid yourself of those rusting scissors you have stashed in the depths of your medicine cabinet because having The Right Tools for the Job™ can make all the difference in the world. That's exactly why Manscaped was founded: to give guys precision-engineered tools for an incredible grooming experience that is second to none. Now, Manscaped would like to give guys a little tutorial on how to get the most out of those very same tools, and that's what this "explain & entertain" series is all about. The goal is to create videos for every single product in the Manscaped line -- explaining all the important product features, uses, and benefits, but doing it in a fresh style that's unexpected, witty, and entertaining. Before we jump into the series though, Manscaped wants you to first produce a 1:30-2:00 pilot video about the Lawn Mower 3.0 trimmer.

The format that they're looking to develop, a blend of education and entertainment, should be able to get men to WANT to watch - and then share - the Manscaped videos. Since that's a unique challenge for a tutorial video, the brand is going to greenlight two filmmakers, each of whom will produce test pilots. From those test pilots, Manscaped will choose one filmmaker to move forward into the series, with the opportunity to make up to 30 tutorial videos.

Finding the right male host is gonna be clutch. You need someone with charisma, authenticity, wit, and excellent comedic timing - the kind of dude with an online dating profile that's actually worth reading. Much of the weight of this show will rest on their shoulders, and he'll have to appear on-screen in every product video. A good format and solid writing will elevate the spokesperson, no doubt, but graphics and transitions play a part too, so think about this holistically. However you approach it, when you pitch, you'll have to include an actor's headshot and their demo reel in your submission.

In terms of the series, some videos will carry the same runtime as the pilot, but most will videos should only run about :30-:45. That'll require some flex in your format. It's also expected that your pilot budget will cover some of the up-front development costs for a series, and if you move forward, you should be thinking about how you can efficiently scale production and post, filming multiple product videos each shoot day, and batching your deliveries. The per video cost of your series budget should be a fraction of the pilot budget.

DELIVERABLES:

  • One 1:30-2:00 explain & entertain tutorial video (16x9, 1x1)
  • Note: If selected to move into series, videos will run 1:30-2:00 for Hero electric products and :30-:45 for secondary products (16x9, 1x1)

TIMELINE:

EXPOSURE:

TARGET AUDIENCE: Males, 18-49 years old, for whom grooming is important but have not found the right tool for the job.

TONE:

  • Witty, funny, and clever. Have fun, but no juvenile/overt/immature/offensive body humor. Elevate your humor.
  • The brand voice is clever, quick, witty, smart, analytical, outspoken, blunt, brash, edgy, and sexy from a place of confidence, no posturing or sexism.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • The Spokesperson should be: Male in 30-40 age range, open to diversity, different body types, and most of all, funny on camera! Must be native English speaker, but open to different accents like British, Australian, New Zealand, American, Canadian.
  • The Pilot should be driven by personality and tone, and it should address 4 key questions:
    • What is the product?
    • Who is it for?
    • How do you use the product?
    • How is it different from other products?
  • Be entertaining, but efficient. Entertainment MUST come within the narrative of demonstration and explanation. No comedic sidebars for the sake of a comedic sidebar. These are tutorial videos, and diversions will frustrate an audience who wants to get to the point.
  • Graphics & Transitions must be used to give the video a coherent look and feel. You can access Manscaped’s fonts, gold palette, typography guidelines, and the Lawn Mower 3.0 logo for your pitch and video.
  • You MUST provide a virtual on-set solution for the client to be "on-set" for production.
  • The product will be shipped for the shoot if selected.
  • Although we're open to the design of a new and original End Card, at the very least you must incorporate this End Card asset for your video.

OPEN BID:

  • This is an open bid project, so you will get to set your own budget proposal for the Pilot, up to $8,000. The Sponsor is interested in seeing tiered pricing options, so please feel free to submit various versions of your pitch at budget, target, and reach price points within that price range. REMINDER: You MUST provide a virtual on-set solution for the client to be "on-set" for production.
  • By participating in this open bid project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a bid. Though most open bid projects on our platform do move forward with a greenlit bid, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any bids via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all open bid submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

Manscaped™ has been growing — and growing fast. They have been evolving as a brand, from a direct-response, product-oriented brand to a lifestyle brand, and as they evolve so have their product offerings: from a groin-centric offer (groin trimmers, ball deodorant, ball toner), to a full line of men’s grooming products including Shampoo, Conditioner, Deodorant, Nose and Ear hair trimmer, Cologne, and beyond.

Key Value Proposition: Manscaped enables men to unlock their confidence by providing innovative and premium grooming products at attainable prices.

REFERENCE VIDEOS FOR INSPIRATION OR TONE:

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 or fewer characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • BID/BUDGET (REQUIRED): This is an open bid project, so you’ll get to set your overall budget proposal. The Sponsor would like each producer to create all of the videos listed in the Deliverables section with a total budget for the Pilot of up to $8,000. Please ensure that your budget factors in appropriate COVID safety protocols (i.e. testing, PPE, cleaning supplies, backup talent, etc.). You can download the budget template here.

  • COVID PROTOCOL (REQUIRED): Please let us know your team’s COVID safety protocols for production. If you’re doing everything yourself, or your team will be working 100% remotely, let us know that this won’t apply. Otherwise, at the very minimum, your safety plan must include information about:
    • What city and state you plan to film in
    • Whether you are filming interiors or exteriors
    • Approximately how many people you plan to have on set
    • How you’ll account for testing, PPE, and distancing on set
    • How you’ll handle talent and backup talent, including any hair, make-up, and wardrobe needs
    • Whether you’ll have a dedicated compliance officer on set

  • HEADSHOT / CASTING BOARDS (REQUIRED): In additional to a Headshot, you should also include actors' demo reels with your submission.

  • SCRIPT (OPTIONAL): This should include dialogue from the video you intend to create.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional, but recommended): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.
