Let’s be real, the road to financial success as a filmmaker is long, winding, and likely paved with less-than-ideal gigs that you might feel are beneath you and your film school degree. Sometimes you may be required to seek out, shall we say, wackier? avenues to keep the lights on using your video production skills.

We may be biased, but we believe Tongal is a great place to find creative work. If you can prove that you’ve got the chops to execute on a brief AND demonstrate a firm grasp of the Project Objectives, you’re gonna do well here. We literally bring the work to you! And unlike other platforms where you have to spend months, if not years, building a following in order to monetize your popularity (*ahem* YouTube), we don’t reallllly care how big a deal you are. It’s all about the work.

But while you wait for your film to get funding or your pitch to be selected by your next client, a filmmaker’s gotta eat. That’s why we turned to the Tongal Community by way of Instagram to learn about the out-of-the-box ways they’ve put their video-making abilities to use. Here’s what they said:

And here are some other ideas we came up with on our own (feel free to tell us YOUR ideas down in the comments!):

  • Are you an excellent editor, or do you make awesome storyboards? Post in Tongal’s Crew Finder forum and offer up your skills to other Tongalers -- hey, you could be crewed on the next Tongie-winning video!

  • Rent out your equipment to other filmmakers via (Tongal Community Resource Partners) KitSplit or Sharegrid

  • Use your shooting and editing skills to create videos for people on Fiverr

  • Tap into your network and discover if someone you know (or their business) has video needs. Fulfill those needs!

  • Get your friends and family (or fans, if you got ‘em) to support your passion on Patreon to help you get through lean times - but make sure to give them something in return

  • Share your production expertise in a blog post by submitting to the Tongal Blog Open Call Project
