Create an upbeat, fresh, and modern docu-style video profile of the award-winning hip-hop artist and actor Common, with a shoot in Los Angeles in February 2022, and featuring health and wellness products from our mystery brand sponsor.

From a busy Hollywood production schedule to his activism and his worldwide travel for live performances, Common is no stranger to being under pressure, but he's got a few Grammys and an Academy Award as proof that he thrives all the same. If you're at his level, when the need to maintain performance and creative excellence is constant, you want to make sure your body is functioning at its best - and that starts from the inside with clean nutrition. After discovering the health and wellness products from our Mystery Sponsor, Common hasn't looked back, and has been using these products consistently to fuel his physical and mental wellbeing. Now he's looking to share his experience and his knowledge, while spotlighting some of the social activism he's involved in.

Our Sponsor is looking to capture Common's story as a short docu-style video - upbeat, fresh, and modern, with a flash of the cool that Common always brings - and show how these products play an important role in his daily routine. Whether he's at the gym training, recording a new track, working on his tai chi, or mobilizing for a cause, Common is a man on the go, and this is what we want to capture. Although some familiarity with Common, his work, and his activism is appreciated, you'll have an opportunity to connect with his team and the brand before the shoot to flesh out an outline for the video. We then anticipate that everything will be filmed at Common's home in Los Angeles in February 2022.

This is going to be a quick and complicated project, but if you're interested, spin up a good Common track (When We Move maybe?), and please see below for additional details.

KEY PRODUCTION LOGISTICS:

  • You'll have 8 hours (including set up and breakdown) to film with Common around his home in Los Angeles.
  • You will need to run this as a SAG production.
  • You MUST account for robust COVID safety protocols.
  • You will NOT need to account for Common's fees in your budget.
  • You will need a stills photographer to be on-set to capture BTS footage, as well as the in-between moments between shots. We are NOT looking for product or staged photos. We will need a full buyout, including copyright release, from the photographer. Please submit their portfolio along with your pitch.
  • You will get a chance to virtually communicate with Common's team and the Sponsor before the shoot.
  • The Sponsor will be on set for this shoot, consider setting up a video village outdoors (including heat fans, etc.) to accommodate all parties involved.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • You will need to account for any crew travel & accommodations in your budget.
  • If we are not able to film at Common's house, you will need to provide a backup location.
  • If we do film at Common's house, you will need to keep a strict "leave no trace" policy: All floors must be covered to ensure no damage is done to the property by film equipment or crew, etc. Do make sure to account for how your production team will handle this in the pitch.
  • Common will have his own makeup crew on set, so filmmakers must be prepared to coordinate with his team.
  • You MUST provide negative test results for each crew member 24 hours prior to your shoot, regardless of their vaccination status. Strict COVID safety protocols will be of paramount consideration, including mandatory mask usage, and crew sizes should be kept to a minimum, with designated backups in the event of a positive test. Some quarantine measures are recommended in the days leading up to your shoot to reduce crew exposure. Please be as specific as possible when submitting a COVID safety plan with your pitch.
  • When filming with Common, no logos of other brands (other than the Mystery Sponsor should be visible. No explicit material or signage.
  • The environment should represent a clean lifestyle. You should shy away from anything that brings a dark undertone, such as skulls, death, or could be taken as negative or offensive.
  • You MAY NOT use music or audio from any of Common's work in your video.

OPEN BID:

  • This is an open bid project, so you will get to set your own budget proposal up to $75,000. COVID testing, strict safety protocols, and pre-shoot crew quarantine should be accounted for in your budget.
  • By participating in this open bid project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a bid. Though most open bid projects on our platform do move forward with a greenlit bid, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any bids via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all open bid submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 or fewer characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. Please list out at least 3 scenes you'd like to capture with Common as well as potential interview questions. Potential scenarios may include Common making a healthy recipe with the mystery sponsor product in the kitchen, Common in his recording studio, Common's morning routine etc. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • PHOTOGRAPHER (REQUIRED): Please upload the portfolio of the photographer you plan to use for the shoot.

  • BID/BUDGET (REQUIRED): This is an open bid project, so you’ll get to set your overall budget proposal. The Sponsor would like each producer to create all of the videos listed in the Deliverables section within a total budget range of $75,000. Please ensure that your budget factors in appropriate COVID safety protocols (i.e. testing, PPE, cleaning supplies, backup talent, etc.). You can download the budget template here.

  • COVID PROTOCOL (REQUIRED): Please let us know your team’s COVID safety protocols for production. If you’re doing everything yourself, or your team will be working 100% remotely, let us know that this won’t apply. Otherwise, at the very minimum, your safety plan must include information about:
    • What city and state you plan to film in
    • Whether you are filming interiors or exteriors
    • Approximately how many people you plan to have on set
    • How you’ll account for testing, PPE, and distancing on set
    • How you’ll handle talent and backup talent, including any hair, make-up, and wardrobe needs
    • Whether you’ll have a dedicated compliance officer on set.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal.
