We are looking for 4 filmmakers to shoot footage & still photography for a fast-moving European live-action PayPal campaign, based on prescribed scenarios that we'll provide, while coordinating with a campaign director who will script and storyboard for your shoot. Pitch your plan to help illustrate how PayPal helps enable memorable moments this summer.

All across Europe, there's a sense of cautious optimism as people look ahead to the summer, with hopes that in a couple months we'll be able to get some sun and see a few friends to do something nice. PayPal is running a fast-moving digital campaign to build on this theme, with original video and photography, and we are looking for 4 different filmmakers who can step up and quickly put together a small shoot to source footage for different scenarios that'll be used to create the campaign. Raw footage and photo stills from these shoots will be provided to a single creative campaign director, who will handle post-production for all videos in the campaign. It is NOT necessary that you're based in Europe, but you must have access to locations that can feel authentically European, especially exteriors. Stylistically, we're looking for something that feels bright, vibrant, colorful, authentic, and cinematic.

As of now, we don't yet know the precise stories for each video, and we can only provide a conservative estimate for talent and locations. The videos are being developed in parallel to this project, so you're not being asked to pitch a creative take. As each finished video will feature several 2-4 seconds of of full-screen product graphics, we're only talking about a handful of short shots and a small number of camera setups. We've laid out assumptions that you should be able to work with below, along with example videos from recent campaigns to give you a clear idea of what to expect. Please carefully review the info in the Background / Additional Details.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED:

  • You will be coordinating with the campaign director, who will provide a script, storyboard, and shot list prior to your shoot, as well as creative direction for a :15 spot, and still photography.
  • You will be responsible for casting, locations, and wardrobe. Given the need to showcase safe behaviors in a COVID environment, casts will be limited in size, and locations will be predominantly European exteriors, urban or semi-urban.
  • You MUST include a still photographer, who will shoot in parallel to your video shoot, using the same cast.
  • All shoots are *likely* to be conducted MOS. There will definitely NOT be dialogue, but we may still need audio.
  • The entirety of your commitment is approximately TWO weeks.
  • You will NOT be required to provide any post-production services.

FOR YOUR PITCH: You will be required to provide a photographer option, along with some location options. We'd also recommend general casting options, *if* you have easy access to casting. We know that's more of a lift though, so it's not mandatory. Otherwise, your pitch should primarily highlight:

  • Past work that shows your ability to shoot something that feels bright, stylish, energetic, authentic, and cinematic
  • Past work that shows your ability to direct talent and get grounded and genuine performances (especially without sound)
  • Your ability to quickly source multiple cast & locations options
  • Your ability to work quickly, within tight confines, with lots of flexibility
  • Check out the Photography Guidelines with regards to your Photographer.

PROCESS:

  1. Four filmmakers will be selected on Wednesday, April 7th.
  2. If greenlit, you will be immediately briefed by Tongal and the Campaign Director on the potential video concepts, and enter pre-production. You will be responsible for providing casting, wardrobe, and location choices, and alternates if necessary, to ensure approval by PayPal.
  3. You will be provided with a script, storyboard, and shot list, as well as camera specs, and a framing guide to confirm all content you will need to capture. All footage MUST adhere to the guidelines and specs provided.
  4. Your photographer will be provided with a shot list, and join a cross-team call with Tongal and a partner agency to discuss style guides and creative direction.
  5. Our Shoot Dates are either Saturday, April 17th or Sunday, April 18th.
  6. You will be responsible for sending all footage to the campaign director by EOD on Monday, April 19th.
  7. You will be responsible for sending all talent, location & art releases (where applicable) to Tongal by EOD on Tuesday, April 20th.

BUDGETING ASSUMPTIONS:

  • One day of shooting, two locations (One Int., One Ext.). Exterior should be urban or semi-urban - think interesting parks, sidewalks, open and safe public areas, or a cool rooftop, European in look and feel. Interior is likely to be a home or apartment that feels relatable to someone in their mid-20's - any type works.
  • Two principal cast: male & female, mid-20's. Four supporting cast: male & female, mid-20's. Two extras: mid 20's. Diverse, relatable, and not at all model-y.
  • Photographer should be a dedicated photographer, with assistant, and some independent lightning setup. No retouching is required.
  • Shoot 2K resolution @ 23.98 fps, framing action for 9x16.
  • All shots that include masked talent must also be filmed without masks. That said, most shots will involve people in safe settings around close friends and family, and few may be wearing masks. To be safe, anticipate that you'll need to shoot maskless alts for 1/3 of your footage.

DELIVERABLES: All raw footage

TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets section.

EXPOSURE: Videos are intended for digital platforms and and social media, along with PayPal's owned channels, and potentially limited broadcast TV buys in some European markets. Videos will be distributed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Ireland.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • A broad European audience across more than a dozen countries.
  • Digital Natives aka Young Professionals - They're under 30, and have always enjoyed a digital first life. They may or may not be current  PayPal users.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

As of this writing, the individual video concepts are still being developed by Tongal, PayPal, and partner agencies in parallel to this project. If they become available, we will provide additional information and an update From a thematic standpoint, this campaign will be rooted in a sense of optimism, as a celebration of the human connection and the little moments that we've all been missing. By providing people with digital solutions to buy products online, or send or receive money to/from family & friends, PayPal is helping to keep us connected and enable these moments. Visually, it will use open exteriors, movement, energy, and color to communicate that optimism.

PAST VIDEOS FOR REFERENCE: These :15 videos were all produced with a similar project structure and budget, and they generally reflect the live-action approach that we may take here, although we anticipate much more energy, color, and movement - not to mention, more exterior locations.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of how you plan to approach capturing the footage. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • PHOTOGRAPHER (REQUIRED): Background information and links to samples from the Photographer you plan to work with. Once your pitch is greenlit, the Sponsor may either approve your Photographer or ask you to submit a new one for approval.

  • LOCATIONS (REQUIRED): Your pitch must include your proposals of the locations you would be looking to film in. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • HEADSHOTS/CASTING BOARDS (Suggested): Although this is not required, given that you don't have any specific roles to cast for, we'd love for you to include general Casting Options with your Pitch, should you have easy access to some, in the event that we're able to make selections immediately upon your selection, if your pitch is chosen.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • HEADSHOT: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the casting choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role with at least one of those options being a person of color.
  • LOCATION: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the location choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve of your options for a location, you may be asked to submit new options.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.
