We are looking for 5 filmmakers to shoot footage for a fast-moving live-action PayPal campaign based on scenarios that we'll provide, all while coordinating with a campaign director who will script and storyboard for your shoot. Pitch your plan to help illustrate how PayPal's different products will allow people to make this holiday season one to remember.

PayPal is running a fast-moving digital video campaign for the holiday season, and owing to the speed and the limitations inherent in live-action production during COVID, they're looking for 5 different filmmakers - from anywhere in the world - who can quickly put together a small shoot to source footage for different scenarios that'll be used to create :15 videos for the campaign. 4K raw footage from these shoots will be provided to a single creative campaign director, who will handle post-production for all videos in the campaign.

If you are selected, you will be coordinating with the campaign director, who will provide a script, storyboard, and shot list prior to your shoot, as well as some creative direction for a :15 spot, although you will be responsible for casting, locations, and wardrobe. All shoots will be conducted MOS, with no need for audio of any kind. The entirety of your commitment is less than 2 weeks. You will NOT be required to provide any post-production services.

As of now, we don't yet know the nature of the footage that we'll need, nor how many locations or talent that we'll need. That is being developed in parallel to this project. That said, PayPal's primarily showcasing features of their app, which can be used at home, so most of these scenarios will take place in a home, and we've laid out conservative assumptions for production that you should be able to work with. We've also included example videos from the current campaign, along with other relevant info, which should give you a clear idea of what to expect. Please carefully review the info in the Background / Additional Details.

For your pitch, you will be required to provide some casting & location options, and we offer some guidance on that below. Your pitch should primarily highlight:

  • Past work that shows your ability to shoot something that feels intimate, authentic, and cinematic
  • Past work that shows your ability to direct talent and get grounded and genuine performances (especially without sound).
  • Your ability to quickly source multiple cast & locations options
  • Your ability to work quickly, within tight confines, with lots of flexibility.
  • On casting, we'd love to see options a family of six - two grandparents, two parents, two kids - as that will give us the most flexibility, and it gives us a starting point when we give you guidance in pre-production.
  • On locations, we'd love to see options for a relatable home or apartment interior, living room, kitchen, or dining area, suitable for a family of four.

PROCESS:

  1. To get ahead of the Monday, 10/05 selection date, FIVE filmmakers and TWO alternates will be informed that they've made the short list on Friday, 10/02, and they will be provided with updates about the concepts they'll shoot, along with casting & location needs.
    • A Tongal producer will post in the Project Forum that evening letting everyone know when the short list has been selected.
    • PayPal will then announce final selections on Monday, 10/05.
  2. If you are greenlit, you will immediately enter pre-production and provide casting, wardrobe & location choices to ensure they are approved by the Sponsor.
  3. A joint kick-off call will be set to coordinate production between you and the creative campaign director.
  4. You will be provided with a script, storyboard, and shot list, as well as camera specs, and a framing guide to confirm all content you will need to capture. All footage MUST adhere to the guidelines and specs provided.
  5. Once all locations, casting & wardrobe are approved, you will be cleared to capture footage between Saturday, 10/10 and Monday, 10/12.
  6. You will be responsible for sending all footage to the campaign director by 6AM PT on 10/14.
  7. You will be responsible for sending all talent, location & art releases (where applicable) to Tongal by EOD on 10/14.

PRODUCTION BUDGETING ASSUMPTIONS:

  • Two days of shooting, two locations (One Int., One Ext.). Interior is likely to be a home or apartment. Exterior will not require snow (but huge bonus if you've got it). Exterior is not required for the Pitch Phase.
  • Two principal cast: make & female, mid-30's. Four supporting cast: male & female, mid-50's, and two children, under 10. Two extras: ages TBD. Diverse, relatable, and not at all model-y.
  • Extensive holiday-themed production design & wardrobe considerations. Although not all spots will include a holiday tree, you should anticipate one, along with any lights, tinsel, gift-wrapped presents, etc. that you might expect to find in someone's home during the holiday season.
  • Shoot 4K resolution @ 23.98 fps, framing action for 9x16.
  • All shots that include masked talent must also be filmed without masks. That said, most shots will involve family in domestic settings, and few may be wearing masks. To be safe, anticipate that you'll need to shoot maskless alts for 1/3 of your footage.

DELIVERABLES: All raw footage

TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets section.

EXPOSURE:

  • Videos will be distributed across multiple channels and platforms in various international markets, including US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia.
  • Most non-broadcast digital platforms will see exposure, including: Instagram (key social focus), Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, YouTube Pre-Roll, website, within emails, as well as other owned channels and paid media.

TARGET AUDIENCE, CASTING, LOCATIONS: Given the global nature of the audience, we are looking for footage and cast that feels diverse, and not too closely tied to any identifiable country or location. This means no major landmarks should be visible in exteriors, nor regional plants (i.e. desert cactus, palm trees), nor regional architecture. The key target demos:

  • Digital Natives aka Young Professionals - They're 25-35, savvy, have always enjoyed a digital first life.
  • Parents - They represent a wider age range, early 30's to mid-40’s, but they have different concerns now they are starting and raising families. They've come to PayPal through a need to engage with digital commerce, or send money, and they use digital payments both for themselves, and on behalf of their children.

TONE: Positive, relatable, authentic, inclusive, optimistic, humble, clever - with a hint of charm and wit.

Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We’re working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and our advice here is to make sure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

Creatively, this campaign is about the different ways we might be celebrating the holidays this year, and how PayPal can "make it one to remember," even if the holiday season may look a little different. The times we live in have been challenging and uncertain for all of us - all over the world - but they want to focus on the little pockets of positivity that we experience in our daily lives, and demonstrate how PayPal can be a uniquely relevant and reassuring force right now. By enabling people with digital solutions to pay safely online with PayPal checkout, to transfer and receive money with friends & family, to be flexible with your spending with options to pay later or pay with rewards, or to donate to worthy causes, PayPal can make it easier for people to be more in control of their financial lives, and seamlessly celebrate the holidays this year.

PayPal wants to showcase their products' relevance in customers’ lives, through their eyes, in a positive way, while staying cognizant of the current environment globally – i.e. social distancing, masks, financial struggles, social activism, protests, and the importance of racial inclusion.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitches will be greenlit, and upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment, the responsible creators will receive funding. Please note: the payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • HEADSHOT: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the casting choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role with at least one of those options being a person of color.
  • LOCATION: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the location choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve of your options for a location, you may be asked to submit new options.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

CREDITS: Upon submission of your footage, you will be immediately prompted to fill out your credits for all the actors, locations and art (if applicable) featured in your video.  You must enter your credits on your Tongal profile page in order for them to be reviewed and approved by a Tongal administrator.

RELEASE FORMS: Once your credits have been approved, you will be required to provide Talent, Location, and Music Releases for all people, places and music appearing in your video (they can be downloaded here). YOU MUST USE THE TONGAL RELEASES.

CREW: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your production and post-production departments. To find crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.
