Humorous Unboxing in The United Arab Emirates Video Project
Pitch
03/14/22 - 06/02/22

Cast a diverse mix of entertaining young English-speaking actors from the United Arab Emirates to shoot influencer-style unboxing content for a big ballsy sizzle video that'll help Manscaped introduce Emiratis to the Performance Package 4.0.

Ever visit Dubai? Then أهلا If not, how about someone on your team, or someone you know? Manscaped has just produced a big fun sizzle video in both English and German for their luxury grooming kit, the Performance Package 4.0, and now they need someone who's familiar with the United Arab Emirates to create a specific English-language version of that video for the UAE market. When you watch that sizzle, you'll notice that it's a montage of "influencer-style" unboxing clips - they don't have any for the UAE though, so this isn't just an editing project, and that's where you come in.

The goal of this project is three-fold: A) Manscaped needs your skills as an editor to recreate that big ballsy sizzle video, while also creating a few cutdowns for social platforms; B) they need you to source additional influencer-style clips from 12 different actors from the UAE and; C) they need to make sure the video you put together is culturally appropriate. When it comes to the talent, we say "source" because, while you'll be responsible for finding and casting the talent, you don't necessarily have to film them all yourself. Since this is influencer-style, all of the talent you've seen in the English and German sizzles have just filmed themselves. We're not looking for high production value - it can feel like it's shot on a nicer webcam or phone camera. The talent itself should be between 18-25, split between males and females, with accents appropriate to the UAE, and you can even include couples if that makes sense - no need for actual influencers though. [Update, 03/16: Also, there is no requirement that the talent currently live in the UAE - they can be based anywhere, and film anywhere that still feels appropriate for the UAE].

In terms of the main sizzle video edit, this essentially is just a recreation of an existing edit, so you don't have to overthink it. However, you should ask each of your talent to run through an entire "unboxing" of the Performance Package in their footage, rather than simply deliver a few select lines, like what you see in this existing clip from Germany. This will give you as much to work with as possible, and Manscaped has provided robust guidelines that should help with filming talent.

Additionally, another director is currently working on edits for several other countries and he will be available to consult and provide project files, so you'll have access to his documents and materials to help with casting, and the edit itself. He'll be able to help out with any issues you may run into - outside of anything related to the UAE, as he's not familiar with that market. You'll also be provided with some select b-roll (like this), and general brand text & logo assets.

For your pitch, we'd recommend submitting with casting options, if possible. There's more info about the Performance Package 4.0, as well as an opportunity to expand the scope a bit, in the Background, and you can always ask questions in the Project Forum.

Opportunity for Expanded Scope: One of Manscaped's best performing influencer videos has been the Excessorize Me video we'd linked to in the Objectives. Although it's not mandatory, they'd love for one of the actors you cast to do some sort of table top unboxing / review like that, but in their own style. If they're able to, Manscaped would expand the scope to include a suite of videos just for that, with a full length unboxing video, as well as additional social cutdowns. If this is possible, let us know in your Pitch, and we can see about accounting for that in production.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 or fewer characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • HEADSHOTS/CASTING BOARDS (Optional): Casting notes or concepts, headshots of actors, etc.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • CASTING: This project requires casting approval. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role, with at least one of those options being a person of color. If the Sponsor does not approve any of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Additionally, owing to the risk of disruption from COVID, you will be expected to have backup talent approved by the Sponsor in advance of production to account for any last-minute changes.
  • TREATMENT: This project requires Treatment approval for the individual shoots. This will involve, at minimum, the five elements below. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your treatment and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a treatment is approved by the Sponsor.
    • A) how each actor will be filmed
    • B) what each actor will be doing
    • C) where each actor will be
    • D) what each actor will be wearing
    • D) whether there will be any major dialogue departures from the guidelines
  • LOCATION: This project requires location approval. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your locations and ask you to submit a new version.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.
