Temptation Island "What If" Animation Project
Pitch
07/03/19 - 07/15/19
Video
01/16/20 - 01/16/20

Create a short and playful animated video for Temptation Island that imagines the seductive possibilities of what might have been had things gone differently for one of the show's hottest couples.

Temptation Island is a social experiment with steamy stakes, and it's the kind of sun-kissed guilty pleasure that's perfect for audiences who are about to dive into their own wild summer fun - but Season 2 is still a ways out, so in the meantime, Temptation Island fans are looking back on a scintillating and scandalous season 1 and wondering, "What if...?" There were plenty of romantic close-calls in Season 1, but one couple in particular (SPOILER ALERT!), Kady & Dr. Johnny, was probably the hottest near-miss of all. Now, USA is asking for an animator to have some fun and help the audience imagine what might have been, had things gone differently.

You will be provided with a high resolution video string-out that tracks the couple's story in Season 1, as well their individual backstories, along with branding guidelines, other relevant video assets, and some story direction to guide the narrative. What we need from you is to A) piece together the backstory for our hypothetical happily-ever-after, B) animate a story that shows us the dreamy alternate reality where things work out, and then C) cut back to footage showing how it actually ended.

DELIVERABLES:

  • (1) 2-3 minute "What If" Video, with only about 45 seconds of animation included in that. The remainder of the video will be short live-action clips that will be provided for you to edit together.

TIMELINE: See in the assets tab.

EXPOSURE: All videos will be produced for the USA Network YouTube Channel and will belong to its Temptation Island Playlist. Please note that USA Network content is only available in the US and US Territories only, and outside of North America it will be difficult for you to engage with this project.

TARGET AUDIENCE:  The demographic skews female, but has a broad audience in the 18-34 age range.

TONE: The show is a steamy guilty pleasure for many, and we expect this supporting material to follow the same tone. Viewers are excited to watch couples navigate the personal perils of temptation island, and we would like this project to follow through on the salacious yet playful themes of the show.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • All live-action footage used in your videos must come from the video assets you are provided, and you will be provided with a full string-out of Kady & Dr. Johnny's story from the show, as well as from the assets provided within this brand guide from USA. You should also follow the guidance within the brand bible for any design elements that you incorporate into the video (i.e. lower-thirds, text, etc.).
  • You should avoid casting voiceover talent to play the roles of characters from the show, and instead use clever on-screen text or narration.
  • Videos should stay strictly PG-13, and not show any graphic or sexual content.

Temptation Island is a social experiment with steamy stakes. Four couples at a crossroads in their relationship put their love to the test by giving "single life" a try. At a tropical island resort, they take a break from each other while living in separate houses with sexy singles to discover if there is another partner with whom they are more compatible. In the end, will the couples return home together, leave with one of the island's "tempters," or break up and go home alone?

While it may sound crazy, Season 1 proved that this social experiment was ultimately fruitful, but there was TONS OF DRAMA along the way. Take a look at some of the existing YouTube content:

If you want to track Kady & Dr. Johnny's journey, you can watch a few highlights below:

Temptation Island has also used some animation, and although it is not mandatory that you adhere to this style, we are including it as a helpful reference, should you want to play off of it:

Creatively, there is lots of room for interpretation in the animation element of this project, and we look forward to your unique style and vision for this element. The 1-2 minutes of context prior to and following the animated portion should be a pretty straightforward edit that simply tees up the story that your animation tells.

NOTE: USA Network content is only available in the US and US Territories only. This project is not restricted to US filmmakers only, but you should be aware that you will not have easy access to Temptation Island YouTube content outside of the US.

In order to be considered for this project you must include the below materials in your Pitch submission. For examples of effective Pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this Video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a Treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • STORYBOARDS (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a Pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your Pitch. Also, test videos, animatic, etc. are welcome.

The most compelling Pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will receive payments to help create the Video(s). Please note the payment of the Pitch award is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets tab.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting filmmakers must receive the below Approvals from the sponsor.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires Script Approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. Two-thirds of your script will simply involve the dialogue that is included in the scenes that you decided to incorporate into your video. Any narrator VO or on-screen copy that you include should also be included to help explain the story that you'll be telling. The brand may provide feedback on your Script and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a Script is approved by the brand.
  • VISUAL TREATMENT: This project requires Visual Treatment Approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase, which will allow the brand to see the animation style you intend to employ and how you'll animate the different characters. The brand may provide feedback on your Visual Treatment and ask you to submit a new version.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a Treatment, Production Budget, Storyboards, Shot List, Call Sheet, and a Music Cue Sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present the Sponsor cast, location, and wardrobe options. They can all be accessed here.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once the Video Phase has closed, the winning submitters will enter the Revisions Phase. During this phase, filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their Videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.

MUSIC:  You may use music from the show itself, which will be provided, but for any original music you will be required to use the USA-approved music provider Frequency to source music for your Video submission. Music from this provider is available only to the Animator selected by USA, at no charge, solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project. It will not require a separate Music Release Form. You will be provided with a log-in and access by a Tongal producer once you are selected.
