Roll On and into the upcoming summer travel season by producing a fun suite of short videos that feature rolling suitcases, with the goal of showing British consumers how PayPal Credit can help you stay in control of your finances when planning a holiday getaway.

Suitcases are back! ...or, almost back. We all know the last twelve months put vacation travel on hold, and the United Kingdom's still on lockdown, but there's a cautious optimism that travel limitations will loosen up at the end of May, and that means it's won't be long before we see suitcases on the move again - rolling right back out of the closet and into transport terminals across the UK, making their way to some of Britain's favorite holiday destinations, wobbly wheels be damned. Even if people end up staying much closer to home, the country's still looking at a boom in summer bookings, and PayPal's got a way to help make that happen with PayPal Credit - but they need a suite of short, punchy, and engaging videos to spread the message.

In an earlier project, PayPal handpicked a clever but surprisingly simple video concept that used the image of rolling suitcases to evoke that empowering feeling of getting back out there and going on holiday again, complete with the tagline "Roll On." We'll give you more detail on this in the Background. What we need from you is to take this concept/tagline pairing and use it to create short videos for two different target audiences: families that travel together, and singles ages 18 to 35. Each audience is likely to go different places and do different things, while carrying different suitcases - thus the split. The key focus is :06 videos here, but you'll also need to optimize your videos for various social platforms & aspect ratios.

These videos need to be bold, optimistic, visually engaging, and dynamic. They also need to communicate our key messages: that PayPal Credit's basically a credit card without the plastic, and the perfect way to spread out the cost of larger online purchases like a holiday trip. Original live action footage is probably necessary, but stock footage and motion graphics are totally acceptable. The brand is NOT looking for a fully animated take.

You'll want to source footage that represents multiple different locations, most in or around Britain, and you'll want to feature a variety suitcases and casts, but there are many ways to do that (or fake that). Since travel is hard right now though, if you do want original live action footage, there's a unique opportunity here to Tap Into Tongal and use the community at large to source footage from all over. Check out more details below, or ask questions in the Project Forum if you need anything.

DELIVERABLES: There are 30 total video assets, with 15 for the Families audience, and 15 for the singles audience, but essentially just two "hero" videos. There are also 12 still photos. Note though that each format has distinctive requirements, and it is important that there is optimization for each platform.

  • One :15 Families video (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • Three :06 Families videos (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • One :15 Singles video (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • Three :06 Singles videos (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • One Families FB/IG Story, from three :06 segments (9x16)
  • One Families Snapchat Story, from three :07-:10 segments (9x16)
  • One Singles FB/IG Story, from three :06 segments (9x16)
  • One Singles Snapchat Story, from three :07-:10 segments (9x16)
  • Twelve still photos (1x1, 9x16). These should not merely be screen grabs, but they can mirror your video shots.

TIMELINE:

EXPOSURE:

  • This is intended only for the UK, and will see placement on YouTube, Facebook & Instagram (News Feed, and Stories), Snapchat (Commercials & Story Ads), and Pinterest.
  • It is critical that you review the platform best practices page.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Families (70%): The primary target is made up of existing PayPal customers who may be parents, and part of a family (age 35+). Families come in all ages, shapes, and sizes, and they don't necessarily have children, so keep that in mind, and remember that children and family size greatly impact the type and style of holidays taken.
  • Singles (30%): The secondary target is made up of "Digital Natives" aka young professionals, 18-35, who aren't necessarily "single," but are probably unmarried and headed out on holiday with friends, peers, and partners.

TONE: Bold, optimistic, engaging, honest, empowering, exciting.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Please stay aware of COVID conditions and respectful of the COVID-19 crisis, and DO NOT encourage people to break travel restrictions before they are officially lifted, or engage in risky behaviors.
  • Owing to COVID, it is possible that UK travel restrictions may remain in place, so some (but not all) of your locations must feel like typical or accessible spots around Britain. Not just beaches, but rolling green hills, small villages, nice hotels, or historical castles, for example.
  • Videos MUST NOT depict summer holidays as lavish blowouts, or show/suggest people living beyond their means.
  • With the focus on luggage and shoes walking alongside them, please be sure to avoid any visible third party branding or logos.
  • Videos should carefully reflect social distancing guidelines.
  • Videos must include PayPal Credit's key message about 0% interest for 4 months on all purchases £99+. More details on this in the Background.
  • Whenever PayPal's "0% interest" offer is mentioned, you must include a complete Representative Example disclaimer below):
    • Representative: 19.9% APR (variable)
Purchase interest rate: 19.9% p.a. (variable)
      Assumed Credit limit: £1,200
Subject to status. Terms and conditions apply. UK residents only.

OPEN BID:

  • This is an open bid project, so you will get to set your own budget proposal up to $39,000 for the full suite. The Sponsor is interested in seeing tiered pricing options, so please feel free to submit various versions of your pitch at budget, target, and reach price points within that price range.
    • If you're going to Tap Into Tongal, your budget should account for filmmakers that you'll use to source footage. Please read the details in the Background for this.
  • By participating in this open bid project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a bid. Though most open bid projects on our platform do move forward with a greenlit bid, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any bids via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all open bid submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

THE "ROLL ON" TAGLINE & CONCEPT

"Roll On" is the attitude of resilience that we need right now, ala "Keep Calm and Carry On," and the visual of rolling luggage is the epitome of going on holiday, so this makes for a perfect combo. PayPal sees this concept almost personifying our suitcases, who really roll with us on any adventure we take. Since our focus is :06 videos, being able to lean on a simple but evocative image like someone's rolling suitcase can help us hook a viewer, and tell our story quickly. The brand likes that there are so many different types of luggage you can showcase, and that each tells us about its owner, and we'd love to represent all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors, from luxury leather rollers to pink unicorn carry-ons. Pairing those with smartly chosen locations, and the right footwear and wardrobe, allows us to tell our story effectively.

The brand is open to different visual interpretations, so long as they feel punchy and engaging, and as long as we see luggage front and center. We should also be able to tell that the locations are holiday destinations (or travel stops along the way, like an airport terminal). This lends itself to cool cinematography and clever match cuts or transitions, and we may not actually need to see any faces, though that's up to you. It's important that there's a clear difference between scenes shot for the "Families" videos, and scenes shot for the "singles" videos, given that they'll each be vacationing differently. It's possible that you shoot a number of scenes for the :15, but pull those scenes out and use them as the :06s.

In terms of your messaging, "Roll On" can be useful for script copy, whether it's "Roll on, summer, roll on," or something like "Roll your payments across 4 months with 0% interest."

DESTINATIONS

Importantly, this is NOT about exotic tropical locales, and it's possible that international travel may still be restricted, so some of your locations should feel like typical British holiday spots. Data shows that the top 5 international destinations being booked right now are the US, Greece, Spain, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates, which is a reflection of the fact that people want to stay safe, and a bit closer to home.

PAYPAL CREDIT

PayPal Credit's basically a credit card without the plastic, and it’s the perfect way to spread out the cost of larger online purchases, giving people the opportunity to make a purchase and then pay it off over time. For purchases of £99 or more, there's 0% interest for 4 months, but you can use it to buy anything within your credit limit. If you're starting to plan your holiday getaway, but need to manage your expenses, PayPal Credit's a great tool to help people stay in control of their finances.

TAP INTO TONGAL

Wishing you could get fresh footage from 4-6 different locations around England or Europe, with just as many different suitcases and cast? You can! If you have a great creative approach that requires something that, we'll help you run your own project on Tongal.com to find other international filmmakers who can shoot that footage for your project, within strict parameters that YOU set. For example, say you're in Canada - you could fake a number of great holiday destinations yourself, but you could also mobilize other filmmakers from around the globe to pick up shots from places like Bournemouth Beach, Barcelona, Rome, or Nice. If you go this route, we'll build the project for you, help you review pitches, and manage production logistics. You can provide specs, storyboards, and whatever guidance you want - you'll just need to cover the production costs for those filmmakers - which we'd recommend keeping in the range of $1500-$3000/each, depending on how complicated your shots are. This isn't mandatory at all, but hey, you might not even need your own shoot! Email iwanyk@tongal.com for more.

PAST VIDEOS FOR REFERENCE

  • Power, Control, Freedom / Power Control Freedom Instagram Lead Video - This tagline was used to promote the PayPal Pay in 3 product in the UK, which splits payments up into 3 equal payments, and gives you the power, control & freedom to manage larger purchases. This is closer to what you might be creating here.
  • Make It Easy / Make Jungles Easy Video - A tagline used to promote PayPal products in 2020 and 2021 to highlight that PayPal makes it easy to do just about anything - including shopping online, settling up a bill among friends, or booking a vacation. This is more of a traditional brand video.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. Please specifically address how you would approach the various social platforms with your overarching concept. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. These should clearly indicate that you're able to handle this style, or have done something very similar. It's not necessary to include videos in Portuguese that you've produced, if it's not your primary language, but it may be helpful to include work from whomever will be handling the translations. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • BID/BUDGET (REQUIRED): This is an open bid project, so you’ll get to set your overall budget proposal. The Sponsor would like each producer to create all of the videos listed in the Deliverables section with a budget of up to $39,000. You can download the budget template here.

  • COVID PROTOCOL (REQUIRED): Please let us know your team’s COVID safety protocols for production. If you’re doing everything yourself, or your team will be working 100% remotely, let us know that this won’t apply. Otherwise, at the very minimum, your safety plan must include information about:
    • What city and state you plan to film in
    • Whether you are filming interiors or exteriors
    • Approximately how many people you plan to have on set
    • How you’ll account for testing, PPE, and distancing on set
    • How you’ll handle talent and backup talent, including any hair, make-up, and wardrobe needs
    • Whether you’ll have a dedicated compliance officer on set

  • SCRIPT (Optional): This should include dialogue from the video you intend to create.

  • STORYBOARDS (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor. Note that, depending on your creative approach, some of the elements below may not apply to you.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires script approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your scripts and ask you to submit new versions. There may be several rounds of feedback until scripts are approved by the Sponsor.
  • STORYBOARD: This project may require storyboard approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your storyboards and ask you to submit new versions.
  • CASTING (If applicable): This project may require casting approval. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role, with at least one of those options being a person of color. If the Sponsor does not approve any of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Additionally, owing to the risk of disruption from COVID, you will be expected to have backup talent approved by the Sponsor in advance of production to account for any last-minute changes.
  • LOCATION (If applicable): This project may require location approval. This means you will need to submit multiple images of your primary filming location. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your location and ask you to submit additional photos or to find a new location and submit images for that.
  • WARDROBE (If applicable) : This project may require wardrobe approval for any wardrobe featured in the key shots. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.
  • PROPS (If applicable) : This project may require approvals for any luggage or key props featured in the video. If the Sponsor does not approve your prop options, you may be asked to submit additional options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.
