In less than 2 weeks, produce a bold, dynamic, and impactful mutli-platform social video suite for the roll out of PayPal's new Pay in 3 payment solution.

The last few years have seen a dramatic shift in the way we buy, but we're not just talking about eCommerce - we're talking about the actual payment & financing landscape. Deferred payment solutions have seen explosive growth, especially the last 6 months, and now that we're heading into the busiest time of the year for eCommerce, PayPal is launching a new solution for the UK: Pay in 3.

Pay in 3 allows you to split your purchase into 3 equal monthly payments, with no set up fee or interest, and the goal of this project is to help PayPal announce this new product by creating a social video suite that is bold, brave, dynamic, and empowering. We're trying to drive users to find out more about Pay in 3 (and use it when checking out), with the message that Pay in 3 gives you the power to live your best life, right now, your way.

Speed and social optimization are key here. This moves lightning fast, so check that timeline - it will impact your creative approach. Then consider that we're creating video content for social platforms, with a heavy emphasis on vertical story formats, and we'll need content to feel native to it's intended platform. We are open to live action, motion graphics, and stop motion - not traditional 2D or 3D animation - and we anticipate this will need smart visual compositions no matter what.

There's a ton of messaging guidance and purchasing info in the Background / Additional Details, and you should give our platform best practices a thorough read. Got questions? Ask in the forum.

DELIVERABLES: 18 total assets, but only 7 formats (each underlined below). Each format has distinctive requirements, and while some assets can be repurposed, deconstructed, and reused for different platforms, it is important that there is optimization for each platform and format. It is however not expected that each of these would require a different shoot or narrative.

  • Four :06 Snapchat Commercials (9x16) - Each can follow the same structure, with different purchases or messages. Any can also be reused for IG, but should stand alone here and include distinctive Snapchat elements.
  • One FB/IG Story, comprised of three :06 videos (9x16)
  • One Snapchat Story, comprised of three :06-:10 videos (9x16)
  • One :20-:30 TikTok Video (9x16) - This can mirror the Snapchat story, but with distinct specs & a focus on audio
  • One :15 FB/IG In-feed Video (1x1, 4x5)
  • Three :06 FB/IG Bumpers (1x1, 4x5)
  • Three Photo Assets (1x1) - These can be drawn from visuals in the videos, but should include text copy.

TIMELINE:

EXPOSURE:

  • This is intended only for the UK, and will see placement on Facebook and Instagram (News Feed, and Stories), Snapchat (Commercials & Story Ads), and TikTok (In feed).
  • It is critical that you review the platform best practices page.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • PRIMARY: Digital Natives aka Young Professionals - They're under 30, and have always enjoyed a digital first life.  At its heart, this segment is driven by a need for social engagement and approval, having grown up plugged into social media and smartphones. They value individuality and experiences and are keen to share these with their social circle. They express their personality and status through their choices in fashion, tech, travel, beauty etc. This can often be influenced by aspirational lifestyles presented on social media. To bridge the gap between aspiration and means, they look for options that allow them to balance their limited income whilst indulging their desired lifestyle. They want to buy or do sooner, without having to delay or wait, and without getting into long term debt. Finance options are expected to be simple, convenient and free.

TONE:

  • For the videos overall: simple, bold, brave, dynamic, empowering, impactful, exciting. That said, it is important that we be honest, engaging, and not at all condescending.
  • For the messaging: Be Direct, and Upfront.
  • You should AVOID the style of existing 2D animated videos that PayPal has, but obviously match the tone of PayPal in general.
  • The brand itself values: integrity, trust, respect, empathy, collaboration, inclusion

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • The key takeaway - although not mandatory for messaging - is "The power to live life your way." Your video must reflect that sentiment, simply and effectively.
  • Another important takeaway is that Pay in 3 is available (almost) anywhere that you can pay with PayPal. We CANNOT say ‘everywhere’ because there are a few minor exclusions.
  • This is NOT a holiday campaign. And holiday imagery should be largely avoided.
  • This is NOT an extension of existing PayPal campaigns, so if you've seen other recent projects on the site, you're not trying to match their look and feel.
  • DO NOT mention the words ‘credit’, ‘installment’, ‘finance’, ‘borrow’, ‘loan’, ‘lend’ etc.
  • DO NOT encourage frivolous or unreasonable spending, particularly in these current times.
  • Videos should carefully reflect social distancing guidelines and not show (or dwell) on activity that demonstrates risky behavior.

OPEN BID:

  • This is an open bid project, so you will get to set your own budget proposal up to $32,000 for the full suite.
  • By participating in this open bid project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a bid. Though most open bid projects on our platform do move forward with a greenlit bid, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any bids via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all open bid submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We’re working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and our advice here is to make sure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

Given the short run time for most of the content, you're going to want to be highly focused with a direct and empowering messaging, driving the video with bold visuals, great music (especially for Snapchat or TikTok!), and strong sound design. Think about tying that music and sound design to the visuals - or, if you're going to include on-screen talent - tying their actions to the music or sound design. Additionally, you should think about relevant and relatable purchases.

What's relevant and relatable? The minimum purchase amount is £45, the max is £2,000, but we don't want to encourage frivolous spending, so you should think about key aspirational purchases that are more meaningful and additive. Often times, this means quality. A better bike, a better laptop, a better pair of shoes, or even home goods like washing machines that'll make a big difference at home.

KEY MESSAGING: Pay in 3 is an enabler that lets you get on with your life and not let your finances get in the way (responsibly, of course). Very little of the below will make it into your video, but you can distill something from this.

PayPal Pay in 3 is about giving power to the people.  It’s the power enabling you to live your best life, right now, your way. It's:

  • The power to purchase what you need without breaking the bank or going into debt.
  • The power of Buyer Protection covering your every purchase.
  • The power to shop almost anywhere with Pay in 3’s ubiquity.
  • The power to flex your repayments with 0% interest.

Ultimately, it’s more than just purchasing power. It’s control over your finances and your life. Less pressure, more peace of mind. With PayPal Pay in 3, the power is yours.

Pay in 3 enables:

  • Increased purchasing power (afford larger ticket items)
  • Flexibility & cashflow management (control your budget and remove financial worry)
  • Bridge the gap from pay day to ‘yay day’ (treat yourself/your family)
  • Try before you buy (and pay), return the items you don’t like (security and convenience)

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. Please specifically address how you would approach the various social platforms with your overarching concept. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • BID: This is an open bid project, so you’ll get to set your overall budget proposal. The Sponsor would like each producer to produce the whole suite with a budget of up to $32,000. Please note: you only need to submit your bid for this project, not a full budget breakdown.

  • SCRIPT (Optional): This should include dialogue from the video you intend to create.

  • STORYBOARDS (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • HEADSHOTS/CASTING BOARDS (Optional): Casting notes or concepts, headshots of actors, etc.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment, the responsible creator will receive funding. Please note: the payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires script approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your scripts and ask you to submit new versions. There may be several rounds of feedback until scripts are approved by the Sponsor.
  • STORYBOARDS: This project requires a Storyboard approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your Storyboard and ask you to submit new versions.
  • CASTING (IF APPLICABLE): This project requires casting approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. You must submit at least two actor options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role with at least one of those options being a person of color.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once the Video Phase has closed, the greenlit submitters will enter the Revisions Phase. Filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.

MUSIC: Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Jingle Punks, Universal Production Music and Epidemic Sound, any of which can be used to source music for your video submission to this project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into submissions to this project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. If you choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form. If you obtain music from third-party catalog providers, you must purchase the appropriate license at your own expense and submit it with your license purchase receipt when you turn in your video paperwork.
