We are looking for a filmmaker to shoot videos for a fast-moving live-action Mexican PayPal campaign, based on several existing concepts while coordinating with a campaign director who will script and storyboard for your shoot. Anticipate a shoot between Thursday, July 28th, and Friday, July 29th.

PayPal Mexico wants people to know that they are the fast and easy way to pay in Mexico, offering the ability to pay online in a single click. This ease & convenience is at the core of their "Pay Happy" creative positioning, which is all about celebrating the small moments of happiness that PayPal enables every time you choose them at checkout. Now, PayPal is looking to extend "Pay Happy" campaign in Mexico with a new suite of videos, and we are looking for ONE filmmaker who can quickly shoot footage for videos that'll be used to create the campaign. Raw footage from these shoots will be provided to a single creative campaign director, who will handle post-production for all videos. It is NOT necessary that you're based in Mexico, but you MUST have access to locations and talent that can feel authentically Mexican, especially in terms of exteriors. Stylistically, we're looking for something that feels bright, vibrant, colorful, authentic, and cinematic.

There will ultimately be three videos, so you will be shooting footage based on three different concepts. You're not being asked to pitch a creative take - instead, we've included information about the videos, their topics, their concepts, and how they're paired up in the Background. It's possible that the same locations could be used in each video, but lead talent will need to be different for each video. As the final :06-:15 videos will each feature 4-5 seconds of full-screen product graphics, we're only talking about a handful of short shots and camera setups. We've laid out assumptions that you should be able to work with below, and there are examples of previous videos from the campaign in the Background as well.

One key factor here is your ability to direct a strong performance from talent when operating without sound. The most successful videos that we've seen are driven by strong talent direction. Beyond that, if you have any other questions, ask away in the forum.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED:

  • You will be coordinating with the campaign director, who will provide a script, storyboard, and shot list prior to your shoot, as well as creative direction for three videos.
  • You will be responsible for casting, locations, and wardrobe. Each video should involve different hero talent, but extras can potentially be re-used. Casts will be limited in size, and locations must feel authentically Mexican.
  • The shoot is *likely* to be conducted MOS. There will definitely NOT be dialogue, but we may need some audio.
  • The entirety of your commitment is approximately TWO weeks.
  • You will NOT be required to provide any post-production services.

FOR YOUR PITCH: You will be required to provide some location options. We'd also recommend casting options, *if* you have easy access to casting. We know that's more of a lift though, so it's not mandatory. Otherwise, your pitch (and the Treatment, specifically) should primarily highlight:

  • Past work that shows your ability to shoot something that feels bright, stylish, energetic, authentic, and cinematic
  • Past work that shows your ability to direct talent and get grounded and genuine performances (especially without sound)
  • Your ability to quickly source multiple cast & authentically Mexican locations options
  • Your ability to work quickly, within tight confines, with lots of flexibility

PROCESS:

  1. One filmmaker will be selected on the evening of Monday, July 11th.
  2. If greenlit, you will be immediately briefed by Tongal and the Campaign Director on the video concepts, and enter pre-production. You will be responsible for providing casting, wardrobe, and location choices, and alternates if necessary, to ensure approval by PayPal.
  3. You will be provided with a script, storyboard, and shot list, as well as camera specs, and a framing guide to confirm all content you will need to capture. All footage MUST adhere to the guidelines and specs provided.
  4. Our Shoot Dates are between Thursday, July 28th, and Friday, July 29th.
  5. You will be responsible for sending all footage to the campaign director by 11:59PM PT on Monday, August 1st.
  6. You will be responsible for sending all talent, location & art releases (where applicable) to Tongal by EOD on  Monday, August 1st.

BUDGETING ASSUMPTIONS:

  • Two days of shooting. Locations specific to Concepts (listed in Background). Locations must feel authentically Mexican, especially if exteriors, and any visible text must be in Mexican Spanish. Exteriors should be urban or semi-urban. Interiors to be a home or apartment that feels relatable to someone in their mid-20's.
  • Generally one hero talent, one supporting talent; details also listed in Background for each video. Casting should be diverse (aka not all Euro-Mestizo), relatable, and not at all model-y.
  • Shoot 2K resolution @ 23.98 fps, framing action for vertical hero aspect ratios.

DELIVERABLES: All raw footage.

TIMELINE: HERE

EXPOSURE: Videos are intended for digital platforms and and social media, along with PayPal's owned channels, in Mexico.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Digital Natives aka young professionals and recent college graduates in Mexico - they're under 30, and have always enjoyed a digital first life. They may or may not be current PayPal users.

Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We’re working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and our advice here is to make sure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

Videos will be in the style and format of previous PayPal Mexico videos.

VIDEO CONCEPTS: The key consideration here is that each video follows a similar format (open on talent & setting, introduce the relevant scenario, demonstrate the PayPal product, cut to CTA footage), and you will not be responsible for any graphics. As you'll see, there are only a handful of shots in each video. Additionally, the elements within each video can be flexible, depending on what you have access to.

  • Food Delivery Video Concept (Two Hero Talent, One Interior Location) - A 20-something person orders a pizza from he/her/their apartment. In a tale as old as time, the pizza delivery person shares a smile, and it's love at first sight. A rapid series of multiple days, including various types of heart/love doodles and notes on the box, always including a sunflower, as our delivery person always has some element of sunflower in he/she/their attire. Our loving pizza person orders another pizza, but this time they have ordered sunflowers to surprise he/she/them with a romantic table setting.
  • Fashion Video Concept (One Hero Talent, One Extra, One to Two Interior Locations) - A 20-something eclectic individual orders an ornate beaded purse online from overseas. The ornate purse is placed in an international box. The box is repeatedly damaged along the way to our hero's hands. In the end, when the box is picked up, the bottom breaks away and the purse, along with the hundred beads, scatter all over the ground.
  • Retail Concept (One Hero Talent, One Interior Location) - A 20-something turns the blender on. The blender doesn't power up, and curious, our hero investigates what could be wrong. After numerous attempts, our hero gives up and purchases a new blender. We have a close-up of the blender perfectly blending. When our hero turns around to get a cup out of the cupboard, a huge amount of dishes fall out of the overcrowded cupboard.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of how you plan to approach capturing the footage. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LOCATIONS (Optional): Your pitch can include your proposals of the locations you would be looking to film in. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • CASTING: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the casting choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role with at least one of those options being a person of color.
  • LOCATION: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the location choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve of your options for a location, you may be asked to submit new options.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.
