We are looking for 2 filmmakers to shoot videos for a fast-moving live-action Mexican PayPal campaign based on concepts that we'll provide, all while coordinating with a campaign director who will script and storyboard for your shoot.

PayPal Mexico wants people to know that they are the fast and easy way to pay in Mexico, offering the ability to pay online in a single click. This ease & convenience is at the core of their "Pay Happy" creative positioning, which is all about celebrating the small moments of happiness that PayPal enables every time you choose them at checkout. Now, PayPal is looking to extend "Pay Happy" campaign in Mexico with a new suite of videos, and we are looking for TWO different filmmakers who can step up and quickly shoot footage for videos that'll be used to create the campaign. Raw footage from these shoots will be provided to a single creative campaign director, who will handle post-production for all videos. It is NOT necessary that you're based in Mexico, but you must have access to locations that can feel authentically Mexican, especially exteriors. Stylistically, we're looking for something that feels bright, vibrant, colorful, authentic, and cinematic.

There will ultimately be four videos, so each filmmaker will be shooting footage for two different videos. You're not being asked to pitch a creative take. We've included information about the videos, their concepts, and how they're paired up in the Background / Additional Details. We've paired these videos based on what we believe is the most practical way to execute them, and it's possible that the same locations could be used in each video. However, lead talent will need to be different for each video. As the final :15 videos will each feature 4-5 seconds of full-screen product graphics, we're only talking about a handful of short shots and camera setups. We've laid out assumptions that you should be able to work with below, and there are examples of other videos from the campaign in the Background as well.

You will be asked to select which video pairing you can execute, but if you can do either one, please let us know. If you have any questions, ask away in the forum.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED:

  • You will be coordinating with the campaign director, who will provide a script, storyboard, and shot list prior to your shoot, as well as creative direction for two :15 spots.
  • You will be responsible for casting, locations, and wardrobe. Each video should involve different hero talent, but extras can potentially be re-used. Casts will be limited in size, and locations must feel authentically Mexican.
  • All shoots are *likely* to be conducted MOS. There will definitely NOT be dialogue, but we may need some audio.
  • The entirety of your commitment is approximately TWO weeks.
  • You will NOT be required to provide any post-production services.

FOR YOUR PITCH: You will be required to provide some location options. We'd also recommend casting options, *if* you have easy access to casting. We know that's more of a lift though, so it's not mandatory. Otherwise, your pitch (and the Treatment, specifically) should primarily highlight:

  • Past work that shows your ability to shoot something that feels bright, stylish, energetic, authentic, and cinematic
  • Past work that shows your ability to direct talent and get grounded and genuine performances (especially without sound)
  • Your ability to quickly source multiple cast & authentically Mexican locations options
  • Your ability to work quickly, within tight confines, with lots of flexibility

PROCESS:

  1. Two filmmakers will be selected the evening of Tuesday, June 29th.
  2. If greenlit, you will be immediately briefed by Tongal and the Campaign Director on the video concepts, and enter pre-production. You will be responsible for providing casting, wardrobe, and location choices, and alternates if necessary, to ensure approval by PayPal.
  3. You will be provided with a script, storyboard, and shot list, as well as camera specs, and a framing guide to confirm all content you will need to capture. All footage MUST adhere to the guidelines and specs provided.
  4. Our Shoot Dates are between Saturday, July 10th and Wednesday, July 14th.
  5. You will be responsible for sending all footage to the campaign director by 6am PT on Thursday, July 15th.
  6. You will be responsible for sending all talent, location & art releases (where applicable) to Tongal by EOD on Thursday, July 15th.

BUDGETING ASSUMPTIONS:

  • 1-2 days of shooting. Locations specific to Concept Pairings (listed in Background). Locations must feel authentically Mexican, especially if exteriors, and any visible text must be in Mexican Spanish. Exteriors should be urban or semi-urban. Interiors to be a home or apartment that feels relatable to someone in their mid-20's.
  • Generally one hero talent, one supporting talent; details also listed in Background for each video. Casting should be diverse (aka not all Euro-Mestizo), relatable, and not at all model-y.
  • Shoot 2K resolution @ 23.98 fps, framing action for vertical hero aspect ratios.

DELIVERABLES: All raw footage.

TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets section.

EXPOSURE: Videos are intended for digital platforms and and social media, along with PayPal's owned channels, in Mexico.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Digital Natives aka young professionals and recent college graduates in Mexico - they're under 30, and have always enjoyed a digital first life. They may or may not be current PayPal users.

Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We’re working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and our advice here is to make sure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

Videos will be in the style and format of previous PayPal Mexico videos.

CONCEPTS: The key consideration here is that each video follows a similar format (open on talent & setting, introduce the relevant scenario, demonstrate the PayPal product, cut to CTA footage), and you will not be responsible for any graphics. As you'll see, there are only a handful of shots in each video. Additionally, the elements within each video can be flexible, depending on what you have access to. You will be required to select one of these two options, although you can pitch to do either one.

VIDEO PAIRING OPTION A:

  • Travel (Two Hero Talent, Multiple Interior & Exterior locations, Some Extras) - Two 20-something friends go on a Mexican adventure using PayPal at every moment. Starting in their apartment, they book a flight somewhere, then while walking through the streets they rent a yurt (or hotel room) on their phone, then in the yurt they purchase a skydiving adventure (or other scary adventure that can be tailored to what the filmmaker can achieve). They show up at the adventure to realize they’ve gotten in way over their heads.
  • Home Décor (Two Hero Talent, One Interior) - A 20-something receives a message from their Mom (or parents), saying that they're coming to visit, and they look around their barely furnished and completely messy apartment - panic! Following a PayPal montage and a new furniture assembly sequence, our 20-something welcomes his unsuspecting parent(s) into his newly perfectly furnished apartment.

VIDEO PAIRING OPTION B:

  • Fashion (One Hero Talent, Two Interiors, Some Extras) - A woman unsatisfied with her drab lockdown wardrobe, purchases an all new happier and very colorful wardrobe with PayPal. She swaggers through her workplace, which we reveal is a modern but stark locale (think legal office, or somewhere generic and less colorful). Her outfit is definitely over-the-top, but she feels amazing with her new exciting wardrobe.
  • Gaming (Two Hero Talent, One Interior, Some Extras) - Our 20-something intensely plays a mobile game. Upon losing the level, they let out a very audible, but purchase more lives through in APP PURCHASES with PayPal, and the game continues on until they finally win - yessssss! They leap up in celebration, but we reveal they've been playing in the library, and the librarian (and other readers), look on in disapproval.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • CONCEPT PAIRING (REQUIRED): Please select which pair of concepts that you can execute.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of how you plan to approach capturing the footage. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LOCATIONS (REQUIRED): Your pitch must include your proposals of the locations you would be looking to film in. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • CASTING: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the casting choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role with at least one of those options being a person of color.
  • LOCATION: The Sponsor will provide feedback on the location choices you propose in your pitch. If the Sponsor does not approve of your options for a location, you may be asked to submit new options.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.
