Produce a suite of three social videos that cover financial wellness topics with captivating, earnest, and sometimes playful content.

Financial wellness is a topic that is brought up a lot nowadays and, for many, finding what steps to take to achieve your financial goals can feel hopeless, confusing, and stressful. Just knowing where to start, especially with a lack of fundamental education - thanks public school system - can make your financial goals feel all the more insurmountable. That's why Navy Federal Credit Union developed MakingCents, a resource hub with everything from expert advice, budget calculators, tools, and resources dedicated to helping you learn to live within your means and manage your money in a way that gives you peace of mind, freedom, and security. Now Navy Federal wants to reach an even wider audience through the use of their social channels, creating videos that inform, educate, and support members and non-members alike in developing healthy relationships with money, manage their debt, and improve their overall credit score.

The goal of this project is to create short social content that both informs and entertains Navy Federal's audience by breaking down finance related concepts and advice into digestible chunks. Up until now, MakingCents has only lived within the Navy Federal website and they're looking to finding ways to bring this branding into the social media landscape in a way that not's ham-fisted or cheesy. While sharing in the same goal as the MakingCents hub, these videos are social first and should feel native to the platforms they're being made for. As for the specific topics being covered, Navy Federal will provide the overview of each topic but it will be up to you to take that overview, distill it down, and craft it into a cohesive script. You can the three topic overviews in the Background.

In terms of format and execution, Navy Federal is thinking to live-action, though they are open to animation, motion graphics, and even stop motion, as long as it doesn't come across as too youthful or distract from the topic. Knowing that the brand is looking for particularly savvy social content, "live-action" can include selfie-style content or even green-screen formats that blend some live action with other visuals. This can be lo-fi smartphone-shot content, or it can be more polished and professional as long as the core focus remains on the topics being broken down. In the Background, you will find some inspiration from what other brands in the financial space are doing. It is not necessary for you to have a large team or extensive production capacities to execute this project.

At their heart, these videos are brand awareness pieces sharing tips and information to their viewers and leaves them wanting to find out more about Navy Federal. They're not looking for overly elaborate "commercial" executions and the brand does not want them to come off as generic, obvious advertisements. If casting live-action, the brand is open to reusing the same cast, locations, and even music. Captions will need to burned into the final videos for any spoken word or VO. Please consider how this might impact your visuals keeping the text safe zones for the respective social platforms in mind.

Note that there is another Navy Federal project live on Tongal right now with a similar ask, and they are willing to consider the same filmmaker(s) for both projects. If you plan to pitch on both projects please be sure to differentiate your pitches, as your approach will need to be different for each project. For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

By participating in this project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a submission. Though most projects do move forward, we'll notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any submissions via the Project Forum. Regardless of the result, all submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and project team.

VIDEO THEMES: Below are three overviews of topics that the Navy Federal team wants these videos to focus on.

  • Using a Secured Card to Build Credit
    • If you have limited experience with credit or have had bad credit in the past, you may think you’re out of luck when it comes to credit card issuers. You’re aren’t! There’s a solution: a secured credit card. A secured credit card is just like a regular credit card, except that it uses your own money as collateral. You deposit a certain amount with the credit card company, known as a security deposit, and that money is returned to you when you close your credit card account or switch to a non-secured card and your balance has been paid.
  • Debt Repayment: Avalanche vs. Snowball - 2 Videos
    • The avalanche method: Focus on debts with the highest interest rates. It might take longer to pay off any one balance, but it will

save you money in the long run.

    • The snowball method: Address your smallest balances first, regardless of interest rates. This could be a good option for people who like the psychological wins of paying off entire balances.
  • Budgeting: Don't Cut Back, Maximize Value
    • Instead of cutting back all spending you should find ways to maximize the value of any spending and to treat your savings like an added expense to stay on top of contributions.

NAVY FEDERAL SOCIAL CHANNELS:

HELPFUL REFERENCE VIDEOS THAT NAVY FEDERAL LIKES FOR INSPIRATION:

ABOUT NAVY FEDERAL: Navy Federal was founded during the Great Depression by seven Navy Department employees who wanted to help themselves and their co-workers reach their financial goals. They envisioned a credit union that would offer loans with affordable rates and manageable terms to its members. What started as a small group of Navy personnel with similar goals has now grown to include officers and enlisted men and women of all branches of the military, including veterans, Department of Defense employees, and their families.

In order to be considered, include the below materials in your submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery. All Pitches remain private, even after a Pitch is selected, and Tongal strives to have Pitch selections made by the end of the Evaluation period, but additional time may be required by the Sponsor, depending on any number of factors.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and produce the content listed in the Deliverables.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A more detailed and specific description of how you propose to execute all of the content listed out in the Deliverables. Explain what we can expect to see, and how you'll make it. If it's helpful, we've provided a treatment template HERE.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, editor, artist, etc.) but do not include links to your showreel. Please link to individual videos.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show what you're capable of. Consider a video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect, or consider test videos, proof-of-concept edits, animatics, etc. For examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery.

  • APPRENTICESHIP ADVISOR (Optional): The Tongal On-Set Apprenticeship Program is an opportunity to support new & emerging talent in production positions with hands-on on-set experience. Please indicate on the pitch submission form if you would be interested in overseeing an apprentice on your production; your answer will neither increase nor decrease the likelihood of your pitch being greenlit. The Tongal On-Set Apprenticeship Program is an opportunity to support new & emerging talent in production positions with hands-on on-set experience. Please indicate on the pitch submission form if you would be interested in overseeing an apprentice on your production; your answer will neither increase nor decrease the likelihood of your pitch being greenlit. Tongal will cover the apprentice's day rate outside of your project budget, and if you are matched with an apprentice, your Tongal producer will reach out with more information. To learn more about the On-Set Apprenticeship Program and the responsibilities of an advisor, please click HERE.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit by the Sponsor, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal, typically included with the project timeline.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to the commencement of actual production, creators MUST receive final approval from the Sponsor on the elements below. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until an element is approved.

If you begin production before you have received final approval, you may need to reshoot or reanimate at your own expense.

  • SCRIPT: Include clear descriptions of the visuals or action, along with dialogue, voiceover, or on-screen text, as relevant.
  • CASTING: Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. Please submit three to four options per role, with at least one of those options being a person of color. It is preferable to share multimedia content (i.e. video & audio clips) to help the Sponsor gauge the talent's performance, rather than headshots or resumes.
  • LOCATION: Present images of your potential filming locations, and submit at least two options per location. If possible, please include context on where you intend to film within each location, what angles you might use, or how you might dress the location.
  • WARDROBE: Submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast's wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role.

For convenience, we've provided some helpful templates that you can consider using for pre-production materials, and they can all be accessed here.
