We are looking for 3 different international filmmakers to shoot interviews with real PayPal customers based in London (UK), Berlin (DE), and Sydney (AU), based on story outlines and talent that we'll provide, all while coordinating with a campaign director who will supply storyboards and creative guidance for your shoot.

The cost-of-living crisis has changed how consumers worldwide spend their hard-earned money. To help show customers in the UK, Germany, and Australia how they can better use, move, and manage their money, PayPal is creating some digital content - based on an existing US series - that will feature real PayPal users being interviewed about how they use PayPal products. The brand has already brought on a campaign director to oversee this new content, but for this project, we are looking for THREE different filmmakers - one in the UK, one in Germany, and one in Australia - who can handle local physical production with real life PayPal customers in London, Berlin, and Sydney, respectively. Raw footage from these shoots will then be provided to the campaign director, who will handle ALL post-production and delivery.

Each filmmaker will need to shoot footage with four different PayPal customers. These customers are being sourced by PayPal, so you won't be responsible for casting, and we're hoping that we'll be able to shoot all four customers over the course of the same two or three day shoot between May 24 and June 4, but it's possible that we may need to split production to account for their schedules. You're NOT being asked to pitch a creative take here, as we'll be trying to closely match the format established by the existing US videos (which you can view in the Background). A key difference that we'll need to account for in these videos is that PayPal wants these new videos to take place in real world environments (e.g. a café, a home, a park bench, etc.), rather than in a studio.

Once selected, you'll work closely with the campaign director and their team, and they will be providing a pre-production guide, which will include a story outline and interview questions for each of the featured PayPal customers, as well as storyboards for you to follow when shooting. You will be responsible for working with talent to source and dress locations (if necessary), as well as handle wardrobe styling, and the talent's hair & makeup. The campaign director will be joining your shoot remotely on the days of production to provide feedback and ensure everything is aligning with their vision, and there may be also local PayPal representatives on set in person. After the shoot you will be asked to send proxy files to the campaign director digitally, as well as ship a hard drive to the UK with a copy of all raw footage.

Please note you do NOT need to be based in the UK, Australia, or Germany to pitch on this project, but there is no additional travel budget available. You can pitch on more than on territory, but you will need to submit one pitch per each territory to be considered. We're breaking down more details about the process, as well as some budgeting assumptions below. If you have any questions, ask away in the forum.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED:

  • You will be coordinating with the campaign director, who will provide pre-production guide (including preferred lenses, preferred sound capture specs, lighting/framing/set dec references, etc.), as well as interview questions, storyboards, and story outlines for the four PayPal customers you'll be responsible for.
  • This series must follow the creative style of the US versions exactly – the single and only difference will be the location in terms of where they are shot.
  • You will be responsible for sourcing locations and wardrobe for all videos.
  • Any and all shoots must take place between May 24 and June 4.
  • You must send ALL footage and raw assets to the campaign director by EOD BST on June 5.
  • You must provide all talent, location, and art releases (if applicable) to Tongal by EOD PT on June 5.
  • You will NOT be required to provide any post-production services.

FOR YOUR PITCH: Your pitch (and the Treatment, specifically) should primarily highlight:

  • Past work that shows your ability to shoot something that feels bright, stylish, energetic, and authentic, ala the existing content.
  • Past work that shows your ability to direct non-professional talent, and get grounded and genuine responses in interview context.
  • Which territory you are pitching for (UK, Australia, or Germany).
  • You should also include details about how you can work in the territory you'll shoot in, and address whether you're local or whether you're traveling. If you are not fluent in German, but pitch to capture footage in Germany, you should also include details about how you can direct talent in the German language.

BUDGETING ASSUMPTIONS:

  • 2-3 days of shooting - The entirety of your commitment is approximately SIX weeks, and we're hoping for one multi-day shoot, but it's possible that we'll need to split the shoot up to account for customer availability.
  • Real world locations - Each customer will need the appearance of their own location. That means you might be able to cleverly dress a single location for multiple vignettes, but it's important that each customer's video have its own look & feel, so it's more likely that you'll need multiple locations. It is also possible that we'll be able to use a home or workplace associated with the customers themselves, but that's not likely.
  • Shoot 4K @ 23.98 fps, framing action for 16x9, with 9x16 vertical safe zones.
  • Two camera setups are ideal. This should be obvious from the sample video, but we wanted to mention it explicitly to be safe, given the interview format. (Updated as of 04/14/23).
  • Remote viewing during production - Your production should be set up for remote viewing on all shoot days so the campaign director can monitor the shoot.
  • Brand present on set - with 1-2 PayPal representatives potentially attending in person.
  • No talent booking/usage fees - You do NOT need to account for these costs in your budget.

By participating in this project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a submission. Though most projects on our platform do move forward, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any submissions via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and produce the content listed out in the Deliverables.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A more detailed and specific description of how you propose to execute all of the content listed out in the Deliverables, both in terms of what we can expect to see, and how you’ll make it. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • CITY (REQUIRED): Please specify if you are pitching to film in London (UK), Berlin (DE), or Sydney (AU).

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • COVID PROTOCOL (REQUIRED): Please let us know your team’s COVID safety protocols for production. If you’re doing everything yourself, or your team will be working 100% remotely, let us know that this won’t apply. Otherwise, at the very minimum, your safety plan must include information about:
    • What city and state you plan to film in
    • Whether you are filming interiors or exteriors
    • Approximately how many people you plan to have on set
    • How you’ll account for testing, PPE, and distancing on set
    • How you’ll handle talent and backup talent, including any hair, make-up, and wardrobe needs
    • Whether you’ll have a dedicated compliance officer on set

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • LOCATION & SET DECORATION: This project requires location and set decoration approval. This means you will need to submit multiple images of your primary filming location, and any key set decoration details. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your location and set decoration and ask you to submit additional photos or to find a new location and submit images for that.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion, but it's possible that the Campaign Director may work with a different document format in pre-production. This will be determined on your kick-off call. Otherwise, we have templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.

ASSET DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS & RESOURCES: You must also provide all raw footage and signed releases for talent, location and artwork (if needed) to the Campaign Director in order to receive final payment. You are responsible for the costs associated the hard drive and shipping.
