Style Master: Roku Interactive Ads Editing Project
Pitch

Video
11/10/22 - 11/14/22

Adapt a pre-existing King C. Gillete Style Master asset into a :30 direct response video optimized for Roku with their creative best practices in mind.

The King C. Gillette line is the pinnacle of over a century's worth of innovation and expertise in men's grooming, and Roku is America's #1 streaming platform. Together, through a brand new partnership with Walmart, they will be bringing consumers the opportunity to purchase the King C. Gillette Style Master directly from a connected TV using the power of the Roku remote. The goal of this project is to create a direct response video that prompts viewers to 'Pick Up Your Roku Remote To Purchase On Your TV Screen.'

Using a combination of this :15 video and these additional assets, you'll create a :30 video that adheres to Roku's creative best practices and that integrates a strong call to action (CTA) leading the viewer to press OK on their Roku remote. We're open to creative takes on how to best do this, whether that's on-screen text and animation or new voiceover. However, we don't expect the creative direction of the original video to be drastically altered. The biggest challenge you face is in extending this video to :30 while incorporating that strong call to action. Roku's best practices do call for the CTA to be in the beginning and end, but it's most important that it fits in naturally with the flow of the current video.

Note that an interactive overlay will be placed over your video by the Roku team before it's deployed. You don't have to do anything special for this, but it would be helpful to plan your visual arrangement to accommodate the eventual inclusion of this overlay. To clarify, you WILL NOT be editing the overlays, so don't use this as part of your pitch. Check out more information on how the interactive element works, as well as Roku's creative best practices in Background. It's important to note that while you'll be adapting to Roku's creative best practices, you should still adhere to Gillette's brand guidelines.

Importantly, Gilette is a Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) signatory, so if you use any voiceover (and voiceover makes a lot of sense here), then your actor will receive the SAG minimum usage rates (i.e. 4 weeks usage at $1,574 per talent). To clarify, the actor does not have to be a member of SAG, and the aforementioned rates will be paid to the actor independent of your production budget on top of any compensation agreement you may arrange with your actor. This should help you bring in some talented VO artists; we've included more detail about SAG in the Executional Mandatories and are happy to answer any further questions you may have about this process.

For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

DELIVERABLES: There are 2 total video assets.

  • One :30 video (16x9)
  • One alternate :30 version (16x9)
  • Alternate variations will involve minor editorial changes, such as CTAs, end-card designs, on-screen text copy, voiceover lines, or other minor edits. This will be decided between the selected editor and client during the revisions process.

TIMELINE: Full project timeline

EXPOSURE: Roku Streaming Services

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Primary: Men aged 18-34
  • Overall: Adults 18+, including women who may buy razors for men as gifts

TONE: Refined, Classy, Reliable, and Trustworthy

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Adhere to Roku's creative best practices.
  • DO NOT animate or alter the overlays. You will not be editing or altering the overlays. They are placed on your video AFTER delivery.
  • You must hire SAG talent and/or pay SAG minimum usage rates for any talent in your video, and you must also specify that this is a SAG production in any casting calls. This does not mean that you're limited to casting SAG voice actors though; instead, any actor you hire must be paid the SAG minimum usage rates (4 weeks, $1,574 per talent), and that payment will be handled through Tongal's vendor. If your actor is not SAG, they will need to sign a Taft-Hartley form for the union. Tongal can help you with this paperwork if you've never done it before, and it's not difficult.
  • You are not necessarily limited to using only the assets provided to you by Gillette. In addition to the provided assets, the selected editor can request access to Storyblocks, Tongal's official stock footage partner, which will come at no additional cost. The challenge here would be sourcing footage that looks native to the existing content and does not feature any actors.
  • Must include the CTA 'Buy Now'

By participating in this project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a bid. Though most projects on our platform do move forward with a greenlit bid, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any bids via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

THE PRODUCT:

The Style Master belongs to the King C. Gillette collection, a high end label of Gillette bearing its founder's name. The King C. Gillette Style Master is a versatile tool designed to edge and trim stubble. It gives you everything you need to craft, maintain, and master your style - no matter how you wear your facial hair.

ROKU CREATIVE BEST PRACTICES:

  • A call to action early in the commercial - and at mid-point - improves performance.
  • Live action visuals that references the call to action and/or the offer can improve performance threefold.
  • If live action isn't possible, visuals and/or voice over additions will improve performance.
  • Including a call to action in the overlay image helps to clarify the opportunity.
  • A consistent storyline that focuses on the product being advertised - instead of creating a complex narrative - is best.
  • Videos with a lighter background are encouraged to ensure that Roku's dark purple overlays stand out prominently.
  • Put disclaimer/legal copy in gray at the bottom part of the video to avoid being obscured by overlays (Roku overlays are already optimized for legal copy in the bottom).
  • Avoid showing any critical information too close to the edge of the TV screen. For their default canvas size, this means having a 90 pixel left/right side margin and a 60 pixel top/bottom margin.

ROKU INTERACTIVE ADS:

With Walmart Connect + Roku, streamers will now be able to purchase any product fulfilled by Walmart right on Roku, America's #1 streaming platform, by simply pressing OK on their Roku remote.

Here is an example of the overlay in action. As you can see, once the viewer hits okay to buy they're taken to a checkout screen wherein they can quickly purchase the item using pre-populated payment information without interrupting the flow of their viewing experience.

Your number one goal, as stated above and continuously repeated, is to get the viewer to Press Okay to Buy. This technology is relatively new, so Roku is interested in unique ways to tackle this challenge.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • SAMPLE VIDEO (REQUIRED): Utilizing the provided assets, please provide a :30 sample video demonstrating your approach to optimizing them for Roku, while integrating the messaging elements outlined in the Executional Mandatories.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into submissions to this project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using each of these music providers, click on any of the providers’ names above.

If you choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form.
