Celebrate the upcoming theatrical release of Wonka on December 15th by creating a joyous and imaginative :30 social video designed for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts that taps into the whimsy and magic of the world of Wonka in a bold, eye-catching way.

Debuting in theaters on December 15th, Wonka shows the origin story of Willy before he became Wonka. Timothée Chalamet brings the iconic character to life, revealing his beginning as a young, brilliant dreamer on a journey to transform the world by bringing joy and inspiration to all through his magical confections. Wonka is the flavory-savory magical adventure that reveals the unstoppable power of daring to dream, in an irresistible holiday film event for all ages.

To get audiences excited to see the movie in theaters, Warner Bros. is looking for multiple filmmakers to each create a single :30 video designed for social media, based on one of the five different concepts that you'll find in the Background. The goal here is to have each concept brought to life as an entertaining social video that can generate excitement about the movie and resonate with fans. For all of the concepts, Warner Bros. wants you to use imaginative, unexpected, and innovative filmmaking techniques that can tap into the magical world of Wonka. Warner Bros. is open to different mediums and executions (live-action, stop-motion, animation, etc.) and is especially interested in how you can combine live-action with visual effects to make the real world feel magical. Check out THIS Instagram to get some inspiration for how you can make the ordinary feel extraordinary.

If you have awesome ideas for more than one creative concept, we encourage you to submit multiple different pitches, since Warner Bros. is open to greenlighting a filmmaker for more than one concept. Regardless of the concept, your video should feel native to platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts and lean into the trends and styles that would organically come across your "For You" page while still being tonally in line with the Wonka look and feel. Your video CAN tap into the nostalgia that older audiences have for the original film, but one of the main goals of this project is to introduce the world of Wonka to younger, new audiences. Additionally, you CAN use chocolate and other candies in your video so long as it is unbranded. Warner Bros. will provide trailer and soundtrack audio to greenlit filmmakers to incorporate into their videos. Beyond this, you can ONLY use audio you record directly for this project (e.g. natural sound, dialogue, sound effects, etc), and you may NOT use trending audio from TikTok or Instagram, any library music or sound effects (including from Tongal's partner libraries), or any stock footage and/or imagery.

We also encourage you to submit an optional proof-of-concept video that illustrates how your idea would come to life. Your proof of concept should be designed for social media, shot in a 9x16 aspect ratio, and up to :30. Feel free to include links to any existing social videos (they don't have to be your own) that represent the style you'd be aiming for.

Check out more information in the Background, and for any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

  • WONKA Fans

TONE/FEEL: Joyous, Playful, Imaginative, Whimsical, Wonderous, Magical. The tone should strictly be fun and uplifting. This is the holiday film of the season!

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Please make sure to check out the OFFICIAL RULES of the project.
  • You may NOT depict the likeness of Timothée Chalamet in your video.
  • Any chocolate or candy depicted in your video must be unbranded.
  • Your video should ALWAYS have sound – TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts are sound-on platforms – and Warner Bros. will provide trailer and soundtrack audio to the greenlit filmmakers to use in their content; beyond this, you can ONLY use audio you record directly for this project (e.g. natural sound, dialogue, sound effects, etc), and you may NOT use trending audio from TikTok or Instagram, any library music or sound effects (including from Tongal's partner libraries).
  • You many NOT use any stock footage and/or imagery in your video.
  • If greenlit, you *might* be asked by Warner Bros. to post your video to your own social channels, so we're asking for your current social media handles in your submission. However, without explicit permission, you may NOT post the video yourself.
  • All graphics and the most important visual content should stay within TikTok's safe zones.
  • You MAY NOT include any logos or other branding within your video.
  • Text can be incorporated but is not required.

CREATIVE CONCEPTS:

  • Is It Candy? - Similar to the "Is it cake?" social trend, people ask the question "Is it candy?" about regular looking objects and then cut into them to reveal the truth. Some of the objects will be revealed to be made with chocolate or other Wonka-inspired candies. The objects themselves could be thematically related, or different key props from the movie (think: Wonka’s top hat!). Consider, when you cut into the object, how can you make the candy reveal feel magical? Does the candy come flying towards the camera? Does the room turn into a purple and gold fantasy land?
  • Chocolate Rube Goldberg Machine - In this, we see that a chocolate malt ball is pushed down a track, colliding into chocolate bars which then knock over more candy items in the way a Rube Goldberg machine works. The video could end with the machine spilling chocolate fudge on the Wonka logo & release date. Beyond the intricacies of the Rube Goldberg machine itself, consider how you can use visual effects to make certain elements of the action "pop out" at the viewer.
  • Wrapper Animation - Recreate a scene from the movie by printing each frame on a different chocolate bar wrapper, and use stop-motion animation to bring it all together so that it looks like the movie scene is "playing" on the chocolate bars themselves. You could recreate a portion of the trailer, a moment from the movie, the logo, or a portrait of Wonka in this style. Beyond the wrappers themselves, how can we infuse more magic into the video using stop-motion animation?
  • Infinite Zoom Art - Use infinite zoom in-out illustrations to create a digital trailer of the movie. These are detailed Illustrations that seem to zoom in-out forever. For example, we pan into a section of the photo, someone's eye, a water droplet, or etc., and it keeps going. Check out this example to see the infinite zoom trend in action.
  • 3D Printed Treats - Did you know it's now possible to 3D print chocolate?! Imagine 3D printed chocolate Wonka logos, Wonka bars, or anything else you can dream up! Outside of the 3D printing itself, think about ways you can make this an engaging social video using visual effects and editing techniques.

The five most compelling pitches will be greenlit by the Sponsor, and the responsible creators will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal, typically included with the project timeline.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to the commencement of actual production, creators MUST receive final approval from the Sponsor on the elements below. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until an element is approved.
