A grim asylum with a grim vampire GROUNDSKEEPER, surviving in the shadows. The only bright spot in his life is ALICE. When she foresees a monster coming for her, he can't walk away.

Through Alice's eyes we see each of his escape plans fail – until he suggests biting her. Alice forbids it: it will cost him his life. Touched that Alice would die rather than see him perish, Groundskeeper does it anyway. He goes to his final battle smiling: after centuries alone, he's found someone to die for.
