Drive attention and excitement for the upcoming theatrical release of The Nun II on September 8th by creating a hair-raising :30 jump-scare video designed for TikTok and IG Reels that hypes audiences up to experience the movie in theaters.

In The Nun II, the sequel to 2018's The Nun, and the ninth film in the Conjuring series, Sister Irene once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demonic nun, when a French priest is murdered in 1956. This second installment of the gothic supernatural horror smash hit is full of jump scares, creepy motifs, and Valak's hauntingly iconic face and nun's habit. Warner Bros. wants to take Valak's visage - and the jump scares - even further, and they're looking to create eight different :30 jump-scare videos for TikTok and IG Reels as part of their #ISawANun campaign.

The goal here is to create a short, sudden, and truly frightening social video that generates excitement about the movie and resonates with fans, while bringing attention to the #ISawANun campaign. While you can work with the movie's themes, the key thing here is that your execution is sudden and unexpected. You can take a prank-style approach where we see someone else being scared, or you can try to scare the audience directly. Who you scare, how you scare them, and whether or not you show the set-up behind it (or the aftermath) is entirely up to you, though fully scripted narratives are probably hard to pull off. Either way, you'll need to abide by all regular Tongal rules and guidelines (e.g. use proper location and talent releases, don't put anyone in danger, and don't use third-party IP – see the Executional Mandatories section below and Official Rules for more).

If you're in the US, you can have Warner Bros. ship you a real prop nun's habit to use in your videos - but it's not necessary to use one. With or without an official nun's habit, consider: how would you bring a 'jump scare' to life in a way that feels surprising, clever, super-scary, and ultimately very social? Your video should feel native to the TikTok and Instagram Reels platforms, and lean into the trends and styles that would organically come across your "For You," page while still being tonally in line with the Nun II voice and audience.

We also encourage you to submit an optional proof-of-concept video that illustrates how your idea would come to life. If you have more than one awesome video idea, we'd encourage you to submit multiple different pitches, since there's a chance Warner Bros. could greenlight multiple video ideas from the same creator. Warner Bros. will provide trailer footage and audio files to the greenlit creators, if needed, so keep that in mind if you choose to create a proof-of-concept for your pitch submission. Your proof-of-concept should be designed for TikTok, shot in a 9x16 aspect ratio, and up to :30. You can even create your proof-of-concept video in the TikTok app itself. Feel free to include links to any existing social videos (they don't have to be your own) that represent the style you'd be aiming for.

For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

DELIVERABLES: There are four total assets, per creator.

  • One :30 social video (9x16, 4x5) with WB-provided endcard
  • One :30 social video (9x16, 4x5) without endcard

TIMELINE: HERE. Please note this project will move quickly!

EXPOSURE: We anticipate content will be used on the platforms listed below, but if casting talent, please be sure your talent reviews the required Talent Release, as it is not limited to these platforms. You should also review the platform best practices page.

  • Warner Bros. and The Nun II social media (TikTok and Instagram, especially Reels)

TARGET AUDIENCE: Horror and genre movie fans, existing fans of The Nun and the Conjuring franchise.

TONE: Hair-raising, thumb-stopping, legitimately scary/surprising. It's OK if viewers laugh, but primarily they should experience a fright!

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Please make sure to check out the OFFICIAL RULES of the project.
  • You must mention the movie's release date, September 8, and encourage audiences to see it in theaters.
  • #ISawANun should be worked into any video copy, dialogue, etc.
  • Warner Bros. will provide audio files to the greenlit filmmakers to use in their content; beyond this, you can ONLY use audio you record directly for this project (i.e. natural sound, dialogue, sound effects, etc). You may NOT use trending audio from TikTok or Instagram, any library music or sound effects (including from Tongal's partner libraries), or any stock footage and/or imagery.
  • While your jump scares should look and feel real, be mindful of obtaining all necessary Tongal releases for talent (anyone on camera) and locations.
  • If greenlit, you *might* be asked by WB to post your video to your own social channels, so we're asking for your current social media handles in your submission. However, without explicit permission, you may NOT post the video yourself.
  • Your ideas should NOT be aimed at kids and MUST be geared towards an older audience (18+).
  • Your videos should ALWAYS have sound – TikTok is a sound-on platform – but you MAY NOT use any audio beyond what you naturally record or soundtrack music cues that Warner Brothers will provide.
  • All graphics and the most important visual content should stay within TikTok's safe zones.
  • You MAY NOT include any logos or other branding within your video, including mentions of other superheroes or superhero franchises
  • Text can be incorporated but is not required.
  • Assets should feel contemporary and adult-facing, while still remaining family-friendly.
  • If organic to your video concept, mention the great cast – see more in the Background.

In The Nun II, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), is a nun who is brought to the St. Carta monastery to help combat the blasphemous demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the main antagonist of the entire Conjuring series.

MORE ABOUT THE NUN II:

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and produce the content listed out in the Deliverables.

  • DROPDOWN (REQUIRED): Using the dropdown on the Submission form, let us know if you're planning on using the Nun costume in your video, or if you don't need to use it.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A more detailed and specific description of how you propose to execute all of the content listed out in the Deliverables, both in terms of what we can expect to see, and how you’ll make it. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA HANDLES (REQUIRED): Please provide your social media handles (i.e. TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Threads, etc.).

  • PROOF-OF-CONCEPT VIDEO (Optional): If helpful, we encourage you to submit an optional proof-of-concept video based on the information provided in the Objectives section. Your proof of concept should be designed for TikTok, shot in a 9x16 aspect ratio, and up to 30 seconds. You can even create your proof-of-concept video in the TikTok app itself. Feel free to include links to any existing social videos (they don't have to be your own) that represent the style you'd be aiming for. The goal is to make your video feel as native to TikTok as possible.

The EIGHT most compelling pitches will be greenlit, and the responsible creators will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.
