Create authentic profiles of three of BET’s spotlighted entrepreneurs as part of the hit show The Grand Hustle with T.I.

At this point, you’ve surely heard of The Grand Hustle, BET’s big new series from T.I. On the show, entrepreneurs rely on their book smarts and their street smarts in equal measure to prove that they’re the ultimate hustler and deserve a chance to run T.I.’s empire.

In connection with the launch of the series, BET did a national call for entrepreneurs from around the country who have a great business idea and a whole lot of hustle but need a little help getting their companies off the ground. And now BET is looking to the Tongal community to bring the stories of three lucky entrepreneurs to life in :60–:90 videos that showcase how each entrepreneur values hard work, makes money moves, and goes all-in on their dreams every day.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help a hard-working and harder-hustling entrepreneur make their dreams come true – and to have T.I. view your work, with BET promoting across social media. Read on for more details on this exciting project.

The goal of this project is to create a :60–:90 video on any or all of three entrepreneurs pre-selected by BET. These folks embody the spirit of BET’s The Grand Hustle and are dedicated to going all in on their dreams (just like you, probably). The Grand Hustle is a great show on a mission to help budding entrepreneurs and aspiring CEOs make it in today’s fast-paced, cutthroat business world, and we want you to create a suite of videos that will help everyone get caught up in the excitement and watch the next big thing unfold. Remember, BET intends to promote your winning Videos as part of The Grand Hustle!

What you need to know:

Each Video should focus on one entrepreneur, and you are welcome to submit a Pitch against a single entrepreneur or separate Pitches for all three. Up to three filmmakers will have the chance to make one video for any or all of the three entrepreneurs selected by BET and outlined below.

In addition to the video prizing ($5,000 per Video), BET will provide a travel stipend up to $2,000 for each winning Pitch; beyond that, the Pitch winners will be responsible for all costs associated with traveling to the subjects’ locations (e.g. airfare and lodging).

Please note that BET may greenlight up to three filmmakers (one per entrepreneur) for this project. You are encouraged to submit individual Pitches against more than one entrepreneur, but filmmakers are not required to Pitch against all three to be eligible.

Your videos will be used to promote The Grand Hustle and could possibly be promoted by T.I. himself.  So get hustling, and let’s make some dreams come true.

--Key Messaging:

Each video in your suite should clearly state who each entrepreneur is, what their business or business dream is, and how they’re working to achieve it.

This contest is a chance for both BET and the entrepreneurs to creatively present their vision for the future of black business, as well as communicate the unique value the entrepreneur’s business brings to the market.

--Tone:

Authentic, inspiring, motivating. Conversational: make each subject shine so the audience relates to them, their goals, and the journey they’re taking to get there. The audience should feel excited about watching your subjects achieve their goals, realize their dreams, and have the chance to work with T.I. to make it all happen.

--Executional Mandatories:

Be sure to shout out The Grand Hustle with #GrandHustleBET and use any provided show footage, bumpers, artwork, etc (TBD).

The Sponsor may select up to three winners; if winners are selected, this project will be worth a total of up to $21,000 ($5,000 total per winning Video) plus a travel stipend of up to $2,000 per awarded Pitch.

This project consists of 5 Phases: A Pitch Phase, a Pre-Production Phase, a Video Phase, a Revisions Phase, and an Assets Delivery Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

The Sponsor will determine whether it will select winning submissions, based on the merits of the pitch and the creativity of the concepts.

PHASE 1: PITCH:

If a Pitch winner is selected for a particular entrepreneur’s video, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, each Pitch winner will receive a total of $5,000 + a travel stipend of up to $2,000 per awarded Pitch to help create that particular Video.

Submit your Pitch (What is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video featuring one of the entrepreneurs selected by BET using:

  • Text (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this Video.

  • Links (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • Treatment (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a Treatment template, which you can find here.

  • Travel Stipend Bid + Budget (REQUIRED):
    • Please include a budget breakdown for estimated travel costs associated with the production of your Video.
    • This should include approximate costs for airfare and lodging based on the production dates outlined in the project timeline.
    • The total cost of your reimbursable travel may not exceed $2,000.

  • Script (Optional): This should include dialogue from the video you intend to create.

  • Storyboards (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • Pitch Video (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a Pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your Pitch. Also, test videos, animatic, etc. are welcome.

If the Sponsor selects one or more Pitch winners, the Pitch winner(s) will each receive a portion of their total prizing as well as a travel stipend of up to $2,000 per awarded Pitch, to help create the Video(s), upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment.  Please note the payment of the Pitch award is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in the winning Pitch, completing Sponsor notes, providing the necessary release forms, and providing all assets required by the sponsor the Pitch winner will receive a final payment of the remaining amount. For an example of an effective Pitch, check out The Indie Machines winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winners of the Video Phase are announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 2: PRE-PRODUCTION – The Pitch Winner will enter the Pre-Production Phase (What is a Pre-Production Phase?). During this phase, filmmakers will discuss their production plan with the Sponsor.

No filmmakers may begin shooting their Video until all Approvals are completed and the Video Phase has officially begun. If you begin shooting your Video during the Pre-Production Phase before you have received final approval, there is a chance you will need to reshoot (at your own expense).

For your convenience we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a Treatment, Production Budget, Storyboards, Shot List, Call Sheet, and a Music Cue Sheet.  They can all be accessed here.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – Once the Pre-Production Phase is complete, the Pitch Winner(s) will each create one :60–:90 Video per subject, based upon their winning Pitches as well as a :10–:15 cutdown. Both videos are due at the close of the Video Phase.

--Video Phase Payout:   Upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, completing Sponsor notes, providing the necessary release forms, and providing all assets required by the sponsor the Pitch winner(s) will receive a final payment of the remaining budget.

--Music:  Tongal has partnered with two premiere music providers: Jingle Punks and Epidemic Sound, either of which can be used to source music for your Video submission to this Project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using either of these music providers, click on their names above.

Tongal members interested in a more customized music solution for your project are invited to connect with our partner Score A Score. Email a brief description of your project (timing, creative, budget, etc.), along with any specific music direction and/or references to their creative team at music@scoreascore.com and include “Tongal Project - Your Name” in the subject line.  Their creative team will be in touch within a few minutes to discuss the simple process and options with you. Please note that you will be responsible for the fees associated with using Score A Score.

If you are selected as a winner and choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form. If you obtain music from third-party catalog providers, you must purchase the appropriate license at your own expense and submit it with your license purchase receipt when you turn in your Video paperwork.

PHASE 4: REVISIONS – Once the Video Phase has closed, the winning filmmaker will enter the Revisions Phase (What is a Revisions Phase?). During this phase, the filmmaker will perform reasonable edits on his/her Video according to the Sponsor’s feedback. The Sponsor will have up to three rounds of revisions on each of the winning filmmakers’ Videos.

PHASE 5: ASSETS DELIVERY - You must also provide all project files, editing sequences and a 1080p .mov master file, using a ProRes, Animation, or Uncompressed Codecin order to submit final payment. You will be responsible for the costs associated the hard drive (if necessary) and shipping.
