Nextdoor is giving 18 creators $1,000 to go out and produce authentic, fun, and shareable videos that celebrate your neighborhood and inspire other people to post their own neighborhood videos on Nextdoor. Pitch us on why your neighborhood should be featured!

Nextdoor is looking to give 18 filmmakers $1,000 to produce and share video stories about their neighborhood. We're looking for authentic, homemade, docu-style videos - up to :90 in length - that celebrate the people, places, and stories that make YOUR neighborhood unique! We're not asking you to create advertising content for Nextdoor; this is really about celebrating your own neighborhood, in your own words. There are a few good examples of videos just like this in the Background, but this is NOT about a big professional shoot, and you can submit something made with footage that you shot on your phone. No Nextdoor logo or branding is needed for your video either.

We want to show that Nextdoor is not just about finding lost pets or local plumbers - neighbors can also create, discover, and share amazing content that celebrates anything and everything in the neighborhood! Plus, Nextdoor wants to build long-term relationships with the top creators in this project. After the videos are produced, one Grand Prize winner will be selected to receive a total of $5,000, and one Second place video will be selected to receive a total of $3,000.

Creators whose submissions are selected will ultimately need to post their video on their own Nextdoor account (and create one, if necessary). More information about this is available in the Background. You will also be asked to provide releases for any talent, locations, and any photography or artwork sourced from other neighbors. For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

PRIZING: If your submission is selected:

  • One 1st Place submission will receive a $5,000 grand prize ($500 Pitch + $4,500 Video Prize)
  • One 2nd Place submission will receive $3,000 ($500 Pitch + $2,500 Video Prize)
  • Sixteen Additional Submissions will receive $1000 each ($500 Pitch + $500 Video Prize)

DELIVERABLES: One up to :90 neighborhood story video (9x16 or 16x9), max 200 MB. Supported video formats include .mov, .avi, .mpg,

.mpeg, .mp4.

TIMELINE:

  • Pitch Submission Phase: August 30 - September 7
  • Pitch Selection Due from Sponsor: September 9
  • Video Phase: September 9 - 20
  • Video Quality Control & Fixes: September 20 - 24

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • If selected, you must register as a member of Nextdoor, and be willing to share your video on your own personal Nextdoor account. Video submissions must abide by Nextdoor community guidelines. More details are available in the Background.
  • Pitch winners will be asked to submit a signed talent release for each person who appears prominently on-screen, as well as a location release for each location you use to film your video. If any children or other minors appear in the video, their parents or legal guardians must sign the talent release on their behalf. If you have any issues with releases, revisions *may* be requested to remove footage that isn't cleared.
  • You MAY NOT use any third-party video footage (like a local business's promotional video, or a charity event's video) without getting a signed photo/video release. If you're using someone else's photography, or you're depicting local artwork, you may also be asked to provide releases for those as well.
  • You should source any music from the Music Providers listed in the Project Requirements.
  • You should AVOID showing third-party brands or IP (e.g. no Nike, Adidas, NFL sports teams, car manufacturers, etc. visible via logos on shirts, hats, shoes, etc.). When in doubt please ask in the forum.
  • If you are using your phone to capture the video, please make sure you are filming in 1080p and at 30FPS (if your phone has a 23.98 FPS setting, that'd be even better).

Nextdoor is where communities come together to greet newcomers, exchange recommendations, and read the latest local news. It's where neighbors support local businesses and get updates from public agencies, or borrow tools and sell couches. It's how to get the most out of everything nearby.

REFERENCE VIDEOS FOR INSPIRATION OR TONE:

IF YOUR SUBMISSION IS SELECTED:

  • You will be asked to post your video on your own personal Nextdoor account after it's been approved by the Nextdoor team. If you don’t have an account, you will need to create one.
  • When posting on Nextdoor, the video must be made viewable to everyone on Nextdoor. (In the posting flow, you will need to choose “Anyone” in the visibility settings.) Once posted, please submit the link as part of your Tongal submission.
  • Please do not mention that your video is a part of a contest in your video or post copy.
  • Please include #loveyourneighborhood post copy. Including the #loveyourneighborhood in the video is optional.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 or fewer characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • SCRIPT (Optional): This should include dialogue from the video you intend to create.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling 18 pitches will be greenlit, and the responsible creators will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

All greenlit pitches will be guaranteed a minimum of payment of $1,000 each ($500 Pitch + $500 Video Prize). After the final videos are delivered, one Grand Prize winner will be selected to receive $5,000 ($500 Pitch + $4,500 Video Prize), and one Second place video will be selected to receive $3,000 ($500 Pitch + $2,500 Video Prize). All creators will receive initial funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once the Video Phase has closed, the greenlit submitters will enter the Revisions Phase. Filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.

MUSIC: Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Jingle Punks, Universal Production Music and Epidemic Sound, any of which can be used to source music for your video submission to this project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into submissions to this project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using each of these music providers, click on any of the providers’ names above.

If you choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form. If you obtain music from third-party catalog providers, you must purchase the appropriate license at your own expense and submit it with your license purchase receipt when you turn in your video paperwork.

ASSET DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS: You must also provide all project files, editing sequences, and a 1080p .mov master file, using a ProRes, Animation, or Uncompressed Codec in order to submit final payment. You are responsible for the costs associated with the hard drive and shipping.

  14. The Sponsor will be entitled to reasonable revisions on the finished Videos without providing additional compensation. Remember it's easier to re-edit than re-shoot so try to get as much coverage as possible.

  15. In addition to the standard Tongal W-9, Winner Affidavit, and IP Assignment, greenlit Video creators MUST also provide Talent, Location, Music (or other) Releases for all assets appearing in their Videos, as well as a photograph/headshot OR copy of a photo ID for all On-camera Talent releases.
