Re-Do It Yourself: A Fan Favorite Film Project Part 1

Revisions

Recreate a scene in entertaining DIY style from one of five fan favorite films that SYFY will be airing in July: Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jurassic Park, The Lost World, or John Wick: Chapter 2.

Open up all your closets and bust out the duck tape, because SYFY wants you to use whatever you've got lying around to produce a clever lo-fi tribute to one of five epic movies they'll be airing this summer. We're talking about some serious fan favorites here - Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jurassic Park, The Lost World, and John Wick: Chapter 2 - and this is all about home-made fan-driven fun. Pay homage and pick your favorite scene, your favorite character, or your favorite quote, and then re-do it yourself in :11 or :16.

You can use boxes, buckets, blankets, belts, bananas... whatevs. High production value is not the point. That said, if you want to show off some crafty cosplay, SYFY's not against it. They're even open to puppets, stop motion, animation, and papercraft. As long as your tribute is clearly recognizable and thoroughly entertaining, we're on board.

Wondering what's up with :11 and :16? SYFY actually wants :15 or :20, but they're going to include tune-in graphics for the movies (as well as your name!) in the last four seconds. That means they need you to tell your narrative in exactly :11 or :16, and then HOLD ON A FINAL SHOT for four seconds.

DELIVERABLES:

  • One :15 or :20 video (16x9). Action should be framed so that your video can be cropped for a 1x1 aspect ratio. If you prefer not to have your video cropped, you may deliver a second version in the revisions phase specifically designed for 1x1.

TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets tab.

EXPOSURE: Videos will air on SYFY and be posted to SYFY’s digital and social platforms, or SYFY.com.

TONE: Clever, unexpected, fun, humorous, eccentric, silly, ironic, nostalgic – entertain us!

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Your video MUST include a final still shot that continues for 4 seconds after the "narrative" concludes. Music and audio can continue over those last 4 seconds, however. Your final shot should not be busy, cluttered, or full of action, as it shouldn't distract from the tune-in graphics, but you're flexible in what you use otherwise.  You are NOT responsible for creating the graphics or tune-in, but if it helps, you can use this template as a guide for where text would appear.
  • Your video CANNOT contain any visible third-party logos or merchandise from any IP or franchises, including the movies you're recreating scenes from. Nothing. No trademarked or copyrighted materials like toys, props, books, posters, games, clothing, and shoes. This is DIY and home-made all the way. Embrace it.
  • Your video CANNOT use any music or sound effects from any IP or franchises. Use your mouth to make sound effects if you want to; you're clever like that. If you do use any library music, you must use one of Tongal's three premiere music providers: Jingle Punks, Universal Production Music and Epidemic Sound, any of which can be used to source music for your video submission to this project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge. To learn more about using each of these music providers, check out the Project Requirements section.
  • Avoid any actor likenesses. You may dress up like John Wick, but don't have your make-up artist replicate Keanu's face, or draw Jeff Goldblum so you can terrorize him as a home-made T-Rex.
  • You MAY use direct quotes from the movie, as long as you're not using actual dialogue audio.
  • I am Groot. I am Groot.

NOTE: Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, so please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We’re working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and our advice here is to make sure your submission is executable while also ensuring everyone's safety.

SYFY will only select ONE video for EACH film, but they're open to selecting a fifth video submission if there's a great option for all five films. Stay tuned for more too, because this is PART ONE, but after this project there will be TWO follow up projects with even more fan favorite films.

If you need a reference, check out the Jurassic Park Fan Edition, which is full of awesome recreations, or this Texas Chainsaw tribute, and this Friday the 13th tribute, both of which put a different spin on the movies they pay homage too.

Oh, also, if you need to watch the trailer for a refresher... we won't tell anyone.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your submission:

  • VIDEO (REQUIRED): Submit a video in 16x9 that is exactly :15 or :20 in length, with a 4 second final shot, recreating or paying tribute to a fan favorite film of your choice.

  • FILM SELECTION (REQUIRED): Select which film you're paying tribute to.

The 4 most compelling videos will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will receive a $1,000 payment for their video.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once individual Videos are submitted, filmmakers will enter Revisions. During this phase, filmmakers may be asked to perform reasonable edits on their Videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.
