Create a short, social-first video for PayPal in the UK and Australia - based on one of two existing concepts - to show that there are more ways to care, and more ways to gift, when you use PayPal Credit this holiday season.

*NOTE: Creative points have been updated as of 9/17/21. Please be sure to reread the brief for the latest*

Whatever we all did to celebrate the holiday season last year, for the 2021 holiday season, we're all hoping for more. More joy. More magic. More food. More fun. More laughter. More love. More family. More friends. And more gift-giving! PayPal Credit is offering shoppers more ways to pay for gifts online this year, with 0% interest for 4 months on all purchases £99 or more. To spread the word, they are looking to create a short social-first content for several global territories, showing that there are more ways to give this holiday season.

PayPal already has a creative concept in mind - you can read more in the Background - which centers around the act of gift-giving. In your pitch, we'll be looking for your interpretation of the concept, and how you would bring it to life in a way that feels tailor made for social-first viewing. Although this only involves one :15 hero video, we'll need to version it for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and ensure that :06 cutdowns are thoughtfully executed. You'll likely need to shoot a variety of talent, with a variety of backgrounds or locations, but we want to avoid VO or dialogue given the global nature of the project.

The holidays have some inherent magic, and we want to make sure that comes across in this content. When we say magic, we don't mean magic wands or fairy dust. Instead, we mean that special spark of joy, excitement, enchantment or fascination that comes from a simple moment - especially during the holiday season. In our case, how can we capture and depict the magic that comes from finding, giving, or receiving the perfect gift?

Tonally, gift-giving is inherently emotional, and we'll definitely want to bring some of the genuine holiday sentimentality, but should also capture that magic and celebration given the short runtime, and we want to make sure PayPal Credit's key message comes across. It's very important to note that we're not trying to glamorize frivolous spending or lavish shopping sprees, so any gift we show should feel like a practical gift that a character genuinely needs, or would find useful. It's gifting with purpose, and using PayPal to make the purchase a bit easier.

In terms of versioning for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, while you should be able to reuse footage between the two versions, there are some key differences that will need to be taken into account. For Black Friday/Cyber Monday, people tend to be shopping for themselves, and self-gifting. For Christmas/The Holiday Season, people tend to be shopping for others. Your pitch should address how your proposed execution could flex or change for both versions. It may be as simple as messaging, but you may also want to shoot additional footage to ensure that the Black Friday/Cyber Monday version does not feel like an afterthought.

Note that you will ONLY be responsible for delivery of UK and Australian assets, but once your videos are mastered, you will be required final .AEP files to another agency who will handle localization for Germany, France, and Italy. For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

DELIVERABLES: There are 18 total video assets per territory; including the UK and Australia, you'll be delivering 36 total assets.

  • One :15 video, w/ Christmas/Holiday focus (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • One :15 video, w/ Black Friday/Cyber Monday focus (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • Two :06 cutdowns, w/ Christmas/Holiday focus (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)
  • Two :06 cutdowns, w/ Black Friday/Cyber Monday focus (16x9, 1x1, 9x16)

TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets section.

EXPOSURE:

  • You will be responsible for delivery of assets for the UK and Australia, but assets will also be localized for Germany, France, and Italy.
  • These videos will see placement on YouTube, Facebook & Instagram (News Feed, and Stories), and Snapchat (Commercials & Story Ads).
  • It is critical that you review the platform best practices page.

TARGET AUDIENCE: "Value Seekers" 30+, from a diverse range of backgrounds and situations.

TONE:

  • Surprise and delight. Be fun, bold, optimistic, engaging, honest, empowering, exciting.
  • Capture the magic. Celebrate the joy, enchantment, fascination & excitement that can come from the smallest moments.
  • Since it's the holiday season, we're okay with some emotion & sentimentality, but don't be too sappy.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Videos must include PayPal Credit's key message about 0% interest for 4 months on all purchases £99+. More details on this in the Background.
  • Your pitch MUST be based on one or both of the existing concepts listed in the Background section below.
  • Your video should NOT involve VO or dialogue, to allow for localization.
  • Facial expressions depicted should be genuine & authentic, and not direct to camera. Aim to capture the magic & joy that comes from smaller moments in holiday gifting, between people. These should not be over the top.
  • Though you do not need to be based in Europe to pitch on this project, you should address how you would plan to address any exterior shooting if you are based elsewhere.
  • Your approach should NOT involve anything "Santa" related.
  • Your approach should feature some reference to a purchase with PayPal Credit, but you should avoid practical phone shots with a PayPal UI, as we are looking to avoid that to make localization more efficient. References will be provided to the greenlit filmmaker, but you should factor designing & animating full screen graphics into your budget.
  • Please stay aware of COVID conditions and respectful of the COVID-19 crisis, and DO NOT depict people engaging in risky behaviors.
  • For legal & regulatory reasons, anytime PayPal's "0% interest" offer is mentioned, you must include a complete Representative Example disclaimer (below). Please be sure to factor this into your creative approach, as time & framing will need to be left for this disclaimer for at least 2 seconds at the end of each video.
    • Representative: 21.9% APR (variable)
    • Purchase interest rate: 21.9% p.a. (variable)
    • Assumed Credit limit: £1,200
    • Subject to status. Terms and conditions apply. UK residents only.

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

CREATIVE CONCEPTS:

Your pitch must be based on one (or more) of the following concepts. Should you like aspects of different concepts, you may combine them if it works for your approach.

  1. Expressions of Gratitude - A visual story told through every expression that someone sees when they give gifts, whether it’s a smile, a hug, an open mouthed look of shock, a blown kiss, a laugh, or even a tear. Every moment is tied to a thoughtful and appropriate gift, and every gift tied to a PayPal Credit purchase. A few specific creative considerations:
    • PayPal likes the ability to show a diverse cross section of talent here, and we we lean towards including more talent, rather than focusing on 2 or 3 people. It'd be smart to cast & shoot more talent than you need. Cast for people with unique but not eccentric looks.
    • Locations for each talent should *feel* different, but you can use one practical location if you're smart about it and it's not obvious.
    • It's very important that these feel like genuine emotions - NOT over the top or cartoonish.
    • Be sure to highlight the shared moment of magic that comes from both giving and receiving a gift.
    • Visuals with the gift should register quickly. If you're shooting a higher number of talent, some gifts could be different versions of the same item (i.e. a white smartphone in one shot, a black smartphone in another)

ABOUT PAYPAL CREDIT - PayPal Credit is basically a credit card without the plastic, and it’s the perfect way to spread out the cost of larger online purchases, giving people the opportunity to make a purchase and then pay it off over time. For purchases of £99 or more, there's 0% interest for 4 months, but you can use it to buy anything within your credit limit. If you're starting to plan your holiday getaway, but need to manage your expenses, PayPal Credit's a great tool to help people stay in control of their finances.

Below are recent live action/lifestyle videos that have been created for PayPal in the last year. Please note these should be used for tonal references only. You are NOT required to show a PayPal user interface in your video, although you may if it makes sense.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 or fewer characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute this video.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what's going to happen in the video. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • CREATIVE CONCEPT (REQUIRED): Select the existing creative concept you are pitching on from the dropdown menu.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • COVID PROTOCOL (REQUIRED): Please let us know your team’s COVID safety protocols for production. If you’re doing everything yourself, or your team will be working 100% remotely, let us know that this won’t apply. Otherwise, at the very minimum, your safety plan must include information about:
    • What city and state you plan to film in
    • Whether you are filming interiors or exteriors
    • Approximately how many people you plan to have on set
    • How you’ll account for testing, PPE, and distancing on set
    • How you’ll handle talent and backup talent, including any hair, make-up, and wardrobe needs
    • Whether you’ll have a dedicated compliance officer on set

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires script approval. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your script and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a script is approved by the Sponsor.
  • STORYBOARD: This project requires storyboard approval. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your storyboard and ask you to submit a new version.
  • CASTING: This project requires casting approval. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role, with at least one of those options being a person of color. If the Sponsor does not approve any of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Additionally, owing to the risk of disruption from COVID, you will be expected to have backup talent approved by the Sponsor in advance of production to account for any last-minute changes.
  • LOCATION: This project requires location approval. This means you will need to submit multiple images of your primary filming location. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your location and ask you to submit additional photos or to find a new location and submit images for that.
  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once the Video Phase has closed, the greenlit submitters will enter the Revisions Phase. Filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.
