Create a suite of three short social videos for The LEGO Group that feature intricate brick-built scenes outside of brick-built windows.

Whether you’re looking at clouds out through an airplane window or daydreaming as you gaze out beyond a New York City fire escape, everyone appreciates a unique window view, and the goal of this project is to create a suite of three videos for The LEGO Group's YouTube and social media channels that feature interesting brick-built scenes outside of brick-built windows. These should feel playful and fun, and each view should have a fun spin or twist at the end (for example, aliens flying by on UFOs).

The LEGO Group has provided the three below concepts and they're looking for a single filmmaker to create a video for each one. In your pitch, please specify your creative approach for how you'd bring each scenario to life. Importantly, you won't be responsible for creating any sound or music for these, so you can focus entirely on the visuals. When it comes to sourcing bricks, you'll need to purchase the LEGO sets yourselves, but you'll be reimbursed separately from what's included in the project budget. Check out the concepts:

  • Airplane Window - Open on a closed airplane window. The shade comes up and light pours in as we see clouds passing by the wing. The country below changes from a shimmering city like New York at night, to the forest of the Appalachia, to square plots of rural farmland. We see other planes and air vehicles passing by in the distance. Maybe a flock of Canadian geese pass by the wing. We can even inject a bit of humor and have a caped minifigure fly by the wing and give a wave.

  • Castle Window - Open on a castle window. The sill is made of “stone” and a candle is burning on its edge. In the scene outside, framed by the window, we see more of the castle and all of the townspeople. There's a horse and carriage riding by with vegetables in the back. Knights are practicing their sword skills. A princess is blowing kisses from her tower to all the peasants below. A little boy and his dog are playing in the mud. A street vendor is shouting and selling his wares. The dog steals an apple from the vendor and a chase ensues.

  • Attic Window - In this instance, we would be looking into a window rather than out. Looking through an old attic with cracked and broken glass, we see an attic full of stuff. There are old coats swinging back and forth. A trunk door creaks open. A black cat is scurrying around chancing mice. A rocking chair seems to be rocking with no one in it. All the while we hear thunder. A burst of lightning fills the room to reveal some spooky things. There's a skeleton rocking in the chair. A ghost is where the coats once were. A minifigure arm is creeping out of the trunk. When the lightning flash dissipates, it all goes back to the scene prior.

For a sense of the style and tone we’re looking for, we've provided links to some examples from the LEGO Brickscapes video series. This is a similar series of short social videos depicting simple brick-built natural landscapes. The series is almost meditative and encourages LEGO fans to take a moment out of their busy lives to relax and chill. THIS SERIES should take the visual style of Brickscapes and turn it up a few notches. The video should be jam-packed full of tiny moments so that the viewer catches something new each time they watch. The Window Still series is less about being meditative and more about creating visually interesting and entertaining moments all around the frame. Easter eggs encouraged.

Check out the Assets section for some examples of what The LEGO Group is looking for visually, as well as the Background section for some inspiration to get you brainstorming about window views. The links to Brickscapes videos are in the Background section for reference as well.

By participating in this project, creators acknowledge that the Sponsor is under no obligation to greenlight a submission. Though most projects on our platform do move forward, we will notify you in the event the Sponsor decides not to fund any submissions via the project forum. Regardless of the result, all submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Sponsor and the project team.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and produce the content listed out in the Deliverables.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A more detailed and specific description of how you propose to execute all of the content listed out in the Deliverables, both in terms of what we can expect to see, and how you’ll make it. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • STORYBOARDS (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • ANIMATION TREATMENT: This project requires  treatment approval. The treatment should describe how you plan to execute the video and how you plan to bring the storytelling to life visually. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your treatment and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a treatment is approved by the Sponsor.

  • ANIMATIC: This project requires animatic approval. The animatic should further depict how you plan to execute the video and a first look at the story coming to life visually. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your animatic and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a animatic is approved by the Sponsor.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.

BUILDING YOUR TEAM: Tongal supports inclusivity in all of our productions and strongly encourages you to hire diverse talent for your team. To find staff & crew in your area, check out these resources and partners.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS & RESOURCES: Once the Video Phase has closed, the greenlit submitters will enter the Revisions Phase. Filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback. Check out our Filmmaker Resource Portal to access helpful post-production resources like Text-Safe Guides for different platforms, Project File Organization Tutorial, Export Presets, and Captioning services.
