Grand Opening Broadcast Video Concept Project
Concept
03/05/21 - 03/12/21

Submit a funny, kitschy, and quirky concept for a short animated intro to a broadcast TV video that celebrates the grand openings of new Ollie's Bargain Outlet stores around the country.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet has GOOD. STUFF. CHEAP - and they want everyone to know it! To that end, they're looking for hilarious, cartoony, and maybe even a little self-deprecating concepts for a short animated intro to a :30 broadcast video that promotes Ollie's Bargain Outlet grand openings across the country in a way that drives in-store traffic.

The majority of the messaging will be the same as this grand opening video for Ollie's new Amarillo location. For the new intro, Ollie's is looking for a fun animation of the Ollie character as a creative hook into the video to grab viewers' attention. Is Ollie going on a treasure hunt for great deals? Is he relaxing on a tropical beach thanks to all of the money he's saved by shopping at Ollie's? Let your imagination run wild!

Your concept must incorporate the "Ollie" character - and while you cannot change his physical appearance, you can animate him and have in him different outfits, costumes, and environments. When developing your concept, you should think about Ollie's established animation style (see Assets tab). While you should primarily think about how your concept will translate to a broadcast video, Ollie's will also use the concept to develop print ads. The final video derived from these concepts will be a mix of animation and live-action.

Ollie's does not sell anything online, so it's all about getting people into their stores. Additionally, they only get a fixed quantity of a certain brand-name product, and once it's sold out, it's sold out! This, along with significantly reduced prices, are Ollie's key messaging pillars.

EXPOSURE: Broadcast TV

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Women; 34-65+
  • Value Seekers, bargain shoppers, treasure hunting shoppers for BRAND name merchandise at up to 70% off the fancy store prices.

TONE: Funny, kitschy, quirky, self-deprecating, cartoony, and a little haphazard.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Your concept must replicate the tone and style of the Ollie's Amarillo Grand Opening video.
  • Concepts must incorporate the "Ollie" character and cannot change him but can animate him and have in him different outfits, costumes, and environments.
  • Ollie's tagline - "Good Stuff Cheap” - will be the slogan at the end of the video.

NOTE: We're testing a new feature on projects like this. In addition to the 5 concepts that the Sponsor will be selecting, five additional submissions will be selected for Honorable Mention, and each will receive $50 for the great creative work that went into them. Submissions selected for Honorable Mention will not be used by the client, and not all submissions identified as Finalists will receive an Honorable Mention.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet is one of America's largest retailers of the closeout merchandise and excess inventory. Their "semi-lovely" stores sell merchandise of all descriptions and some beyond description.

REFERENCE VIDEOS FOR INSPIRATION OR TONE:

Tell us your Concept in 250 characters or fewer. Remember, a concept is not a detailed script - it is a spark of inspiration or distillation of what will happen in the video. As always, concepts should be clever and engaging.

The 5 concept submissions will be selected and receive $250 each. Five additional concept submissions will be selected for Honorable Mention, and will receive $50 each. Submissions selected for Honorable Mention will not be used by the client, and not all submissions identified as Finalists will receive an Honorable Mention.

Should your concept be selected, you must complete the Winner Affidavit and IP Assignment forms in order to receive payment. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification when a selection has been announced.
