In honor of Earth Day, support Advance Auto Part's sustainability efforts by producing a dynamic and educational 2D explainer video about their car battery recycling process - in English, Spanish, and French.

Did you know that the DieHard auto batteries carried at your local Advance Auto Parts are made up of 94% recycled materials? DieHard is the first auto battery to receive a UL validation and Advance Auto Parts is looking for an animator to help them explain what that means and why it's so important. For the record, UL (formerly Underwriter's Laboratories) is a global safety science and product testing company, so that validation is a big deal.

In this up to two minute animated explainer video, we want to convey the sustainability efforts that DieHard has made to receive that validation, and help visualize the actual car battery recycling process. The goal of this project then is to find a way to make this video not only interesting to watch, but also easy to comprehend. There is a balance to be made here in entertaining viewers while educating them on what it means to be UL Validated, what the recycling process looks like, and why DieHard is "The Sustainable Choice."

You'll want to rely heavily on motion graphics or 2D animation, along with an informative and upbeat voiceover to guide your video. In an effort to make this information accessible to multiple demographics, the videos will need to be delivered in English, Spanish, and French. The sponsor has agreed to provide translations for all written material and on screen graphics, but it will be up to you to execute those edits and record the voiceover for all three languages. You might consider bringing on a language consultant for Spanish and French, because you will need to be able to QC both the recordings and the final deliverables to ensure that your French and Spanish is accurate. If necessary, let us know and we can help put you in contact with language consultants.

The video will also be hosted on multiple landing pages and final deliverables will need to adhere to specific brand guidelines for Advance Auto Parts, DieHard, and Carquest. The sponsor will be providing the different brand color pallets to be applied to onscreen graphics, so please consider a design and workflow that would lend itself well to recoloring when planning out your approach.

Please review these helpful diagrams and be sure to check out the Background Section to understand what the recycling process involves.Once greenlit, Advance Auto Parts will be providing detailed information and talking points to help guide a narrative script during pre-production.

For your pitch we are asking you to please submit samples of relevant work as well as potential style frames for an Earth Day explainer video. Samples of other companies climate commitment videos have been shared in the Background Section, to guide the general sense of tone that they're after, BUT they are open to different conceptual approaches and styles, so long as the messaging comes through. For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum.

RECYCLING PROCESS:

  • Used batteries are collected at your local Advance Auto Parts and Carquest Stores every day
  • They are aggregated and sent in a closed cycle logistics and collections system to recycling centers
  • Metals and plastics are recovered from the used batteries and are then sent to manufacturing facilities that make DieHard batteries
    • For reference, but not for verbal inclusion:
      1. The old lead-acid batteries are broken apart
      2. Lead and heavy materials are separated from the plastic
      3. Lead is formed into lead ingots, which are then melted down again to form the lead plates and other lead components of the battery.
      4. The polypropylene is formed into pellets that are then made into new battery cases.
      5. The old battery acid is processed and converted into sodium sulfate, which is used in detergent, glass and textile manufacturing.
  • New DieHard batteries are created from a minimum of 94% recycled materials, validated by UL
  • Distributed back to  stores for purchase

Notes:

  • Stay away from talking about acid or co/bi-products
  • Need to keep at a high-level
    • This is a mass-balanced approach
    • There are enough materials coming into resource pool (not molecule for molecule)

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): Up to 500 characters synopsizing how you plan to approach and produce the content listed out in the Deliverables.

  • TREATMENT (REQUIRED): A more detailed and specific description of how you propose to execute all of the content listed out in the Deliverables, both in terms of what we can expect to see, and how you’ll make it. If it's helpful to you, we've provided a treatment template, which you can find here.

  • STYLE FRAMES (REQUIRED): Illustrated stills that showcase what your animated take will visually look like.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To your previous video work. Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.

  • STORYBOARDS (Optional): Additional concept art, storyboards, shot list, anything that helps get your point across. You can download the Tongal storyboard template here.

  • PITCH VIDEO (Optional): This is your opportunity to be face-to-face with the Sponsor and show them what you're capable of. Consider submitting a pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome. For some examples of effective Pitch videos, check out this gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the Sponsor gives creator(s) the green light to move forward.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and the responsible creator will then receive an email from Tongal producers detailing next steps. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification that a selection has been announced. To ensure you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven’t unsubscribed.

Creators who’ve been selected will receive funding upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment. Payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule.

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires script approval. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your script and ask you to submit a new version. There may be multiple rounds of feedback until a script is approved by the Sponsor.

  • STORYBOARD: This project requires storyboard approval. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your storyboard and ask you to submit a new version.

  • VO CASTING: This project requires casting approval. Tongal advocates for inclusivity in on-screen representation and diversity in casting. As a best practice, please submit three to four options per role, with at least one of those options being a person of color. If the Sponsor does not approve any of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new actor options. Additionally, owing to the risk of disruption from COVID, you will be expected to have backup talent approved by the Sponsor in advance of production to account for any last-minute changes.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a treatment, production budget, storyboards, shot list, call sheet, and a music cue sheet. Additionally, there are templates that will help you clearly present cast, location, and wardrobe options to the Sponsor. They can all be accessed here.
