Two weeks ago, I met with the VP of Comedy at Warner Brothers to discuss a script I was working on. I was stuck with certain parts of it, and in talking with her she gave me the best writing advice: experiment. I had been working diligently on a movie script for months, but in doing so I had neglected any other form of writing. She told me to write a SNL style skit, then go back to my script, write a one-act play, go back to my script, some poems, back to the script, and so on. The benefit to this is that writing is NEVER singular. If I write a joke in an SNL skit, what's to say I can't include that joke in my script?
Working on different writing styles and projects is beneficial for everyone, especially ideators on Tongal. Tongal has a unique format, and it can be tricky to master. However, writing poems will help with brevity, a comedy sketch will help generate funny ideas for commercials, and so on. My blog post will explore this advice and relate it to Tongal specifically.
