CGI (Computer Generated Image/ry) in film is a complex and touchy subject. In the modern age we see spectacular imagery in films through the use of computer enhancements and technology, things that film makers years ago would never have dreamed of having access to. But with great CGI comes bad CGI. In this article, I want to talk about the implementation of CGI in modern film by using a timeline as to when it was both first introduced as well as first successfully introduced. There are some who stand by the use of CGI, for an example, fantasy and Sci-Fi films depend on it for many of their artificial worlds, characters and effects, whereas, there are some who scorn this technology and look to the film of yesteryear in a more positive light and direction. I want to compare the use of CGI and compare it to the success of practical effects and also talk about how they co exist well in film by comparing bad and good examples of CGI to reach a conclusion to if CGI is good or bad in film.
