Assignments to places or countries you are not familiar with can be unnerving when you know no one there, or where to start. But a fixer on location, can help you navigate around those uncertainties and help you get your interviews or film without hitches. But how do you go about finding the perfect fixer. To be honest, at times the search for a fixer starts blindly, you email or call anyone based on contacts you find online. But should any of those potential fixers reply, subject them through a series of questions on who and what they know. That way, you are able to evaluate their core competencies and subject knowledge based on their responses. The fixer topic is ideal for film crews or photographers planning to work in foreign countries or unfamiliar locations, but lack contacts. I've worked as a fixer thrice in Kenya to foreign TV crews from India and France. So this is a subject I got authority to write on, since I was taken through a series of evaluations to be hired.
