During the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020 Football Championship, PayPal is looking for a visionary filmmaker that can assemble a team to direct, produce, and edit a fast-moving live-action video campaign, personally directing the hero video, while simultaneously coordinating multiple satellite shoots around the globe, all designed to show how PayPal's products can help European fans & consumers in celebrating the tournament together.

The COVID-19 pandemic upended countless big events last year, and the UEFA Euro 2020 Football Championship was no different - but better days are on the horizon. See, the 2020 tournament's finally expected to proceed this June, and hundreds of millions of fans are getting excited. To call this a moment of catharsis is an understatement. The beautiful game - back on a big stage, in a big way - bringing people from all of Europe together ...even the "casual" fans. It's that togetherness that's why we're here. PayPal knows football brings about community and connection in a way that few things can, and it just so happens that PayPal products stand at the unique intersection of connection and commerce - helping European consumers to celebrate with friends and family and make the most of their experience.

With that in mind, PayPal's looking to create powerful content that celebrates this cultural moment, tapping into the powerful feelings that come with being a fan and being with friends and family again. It's NOT just about football, and it's NOT focused on the athletes or the games themselves.

[03/08 NOTE: PayPal's creative strategy has been refined to focus on being a supporter of "fans" specifically, but not just foot ball fans, or an individual team's fans; rather, "fans" in a loose sense, like the "backyard BBQ fan." That said, we anticipate your hero video should still revolve around an obvious Euros/Football setup, so it's only the product videos that may spotlight other types of fans. This means that the concept / message should not simply be about "being together," but about spotlighting fans as they come together.]

This project itself is expansive and very fast-moving: PayPal needs a creative campaign director who can put together a team to script, storyboard, produce, and edit a package of 4 core live-action videos, taking point on shooting the brand hero video that will anchor the campaign, while simultaneously coordinating 3 different satellite shoots with other filmmakers from around the world, each with their own separate budget. Almost all of the pre-production and post-production materials will flow through you, including any motion graphics, and while you'll only physically produce the hero video, you'll supervise and provide creative direction to 3 other filmmakers who will be shooting product videos. A "big idea" for this campaign is being developed in parallel, but it's like to be more about the copy than a video concept, and either way we know this will revolve around smaller live-action shoots focused on fandom and togetherness. We'll cover process first below, then elaborate on the creative in the Background/Additional Details.

For your Pitch submission, we're asking you to edit together a :15 proof-of-concept sample video (16x9) demonstrating a potential approach to the hero video that celebrates casual fans of the game coming together. This sample video is about your instinct for pacing, tone, framing, video structure, motion graphics, as well as finding a way to tell a simple story in an emotionally engaging way. You may use whatever footage you can find online, as well as temp motion graphics.

For any questions or other project updates, check out the Project Forum. Note: Updates throughout in red text.

PROCESS:

  1. Once greenlit, you will jump into scripting & storyboards for all lengths of each of the 5 core videos, including your hero spot, and 4 product spots, aided by two other projects that we'll be running on Tongal.com.
    • In one parallel Tongal project, we'll have sourced different scenario concepts from the Tongal community for the purposes of each video's development - but you will have a say in which concepts move forward as you start to script and board.
    • In another parallel Tongal project, multiple "satellite" filmmakers will be selected to shoot the 4 product videos that you develop. Each satellite filmmaker will have their own budgets (ranging from $20,000-$25,000), and you'll work with Tongal and Paypal to make selections to ensure that you've got the people you need, since you'll be coordinating closely with them.
  2. Once selected, and with your input, satellite filmmakers will be responsible to provide to you casting, location, production design, and wardrobe options. You'll be responsible for the same on your own hero shoot. Once collected, you'll assemble ALL materials for presentation to PayPal.
  3. As the spots will ultimately be delivered for upwards of 15 countries, shoots will not have dialogue, and *may* actually proceed MOS; which will help with logistics and cost.
  4. In addition to scripts and boards, you will provide satellite filmmakers with a Shot List for their videos, along with any camera specs or framing guidance that may be helpful.
  5. PayPal will provide clear guidance for photography requirements, which should be met by a dedicated photographer shooting in parallel to your shoot.
  6. Once satellite shoots are complete, ALL raw footage and assets will be delivered to you for post-production, and satellite filmmakers will be wrapped.
  7. You will then be responsible for delivery of all English language assets (UK & Ireland), as well as raw files from your still photography shoot, and your working project files, which will be promptly handed off to a translation agency that will handle localization for over a dozen non-English-speaking territories.

[03/03 NOTE: Since launch, we've removed approximately 40 deliverables and 1 satellite shoot, and reduced the total budget by $6,000 to reflect that.]

DELIVERABLES: We're anticipating approximately 160 video deliverables, but only 4 core videos, with each versioned many times over for different territories, platforms, disclaimers, aspect ratios, lengths, and endcards. The changes are likely to be incremental, not requiring major edits. The list below accounts for the 4 core videos, as well as key lengths and aspect ratios. It does NOT account for territories or versioning. Deliveries will be spread across 3 phases, and may be revised downward.

  • One :30 brand hero video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :15 brand hero video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :06 brand hero video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :15 Checkout product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :06 Checkout product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :15 Buy Now, Pay Later product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :06 But Now, Pay Later product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :15 P2P product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • One :06 P2P product video (16x9, 4x5, 9x16)
  • Twenty Still Photos (taken during a photo shoot running in parallel with the hero video shoot; photos can be delivered RAW - NO need for retouching)
  • NOTE: Videos for non-English territories will be translated and localized by an external partner. In addition to delivering English-language versions of the above videos (for the UK & Ireland), you will be required to turn over working project files for use by the localization agency. If any territory requires video edits outside of text & graphic tweaks, you may be responsible for those edits.

TIMELINE:

EXPOSURE:

  • Videos are intended for Instagram (a key social focus), Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and digital programmatic media, along with PayPal's owned channels, and potentially limited broadcast TV buys in some markets.
  • Although you will only be responsible for videos hitting the UK and Ireland, videos will be localized and distributed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Ireland. More territories may be added.
  • Please review the platform best practices page.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • A broad European audience across more than a dozen countries. Our target consumers have a social interest in sports, but may not necessarily be hardcore fans, and they're also interested in the verticals of gaming & streaming, fashion, home & electronics, and food & grocery delivery
  • Digital Natives aka Young Professionals - They're under 30, and have always enjoyed a digital first life. They may or may not be current  PayPal users.

TONE: For the videos: Energetic, inspiring, exciting, relatable, authentic, inclusive, optimistic, nostalgic - with a hint of charm and wit.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Update: PayPal is planning for a kick-off call with the select campaign director on Tuesday, March 16th at 4pm GMT / 9am PDT. We'll give shortlisted submitters a heads-up if they should potentially be available for that.
  • Though this project is open to filmmakers worldwide, it is important that content feel genuinely localized for a European audience. To that end, it is highly recommended that you have European residents as a part of your team, and have access to European-style locations.
  • To ensure ease of localization across the different territories, you should avoid any on-screen dialogue or VO. It is also possible that satellite filmmakers may shoot MOS.
  • Videos can & should feature football, but must NOT mention the Euro 2020 tournament in name, or use logo or UEFA content. Also, videos may NOT show any specific team logos; and any football apparel (if featured), must be unbranded.
  • Although we anticipate that small groups can safely assemble by June of 2021, videos MUST avoid shots of large gatherings, crowds, stadiums, or busy pubs. Videos should carefully reflect social distancing guidelines and not show (or dwell) on activity that demonstrates risky behavior.
  • All videos MUST show the app & user experience with on-screen graphics and animation. The live-action story will function as a framework for the app experience & product offering. Any phones depicted while demonstrating the app should be unbranded.
  • All product videos MUST quickly communicate the key features and relevance of each product (which are laid out in the product descriptions in Background/Add'l Details).
  • All videos MUST include the CTA "Download the App"

Shooting live action or stop motion? Our priority is ensuring everyone's safety, and we're now requiring a COVID safety protocol plan for all relevant productions. Please review our COVID-19 Production Safety Guide and check federal, state, and local rules before and during your shoot to make sure your on-set protocols are up to date. We're working hard to keep people working during this extraordinary time, and you should ensure your submission is executable within the anticipated timeline and budget, while also ensuring everyone's safety.

CREATIVE CONCEPT: The official big idea for the campaign is being developed by Tongal, PayPal, and partner agencies in parallel to this project, and it will NOT be available in time for the close of the Pitch Phase, but it will be provided to the greenlit filmmaker upon selection, and it should closely follow the themes we've discussed, functioning more as a tagline/container than a specific video concept. It is focused on FANS, and on the TOGETHERNESS that comes from watching the Euros and from people having a chance to start reconnecting (safely) this summer. As mentioned before, this is NOT about athletes, stadiums, specific games, or teams, and it's NOT just about hardcore fans.

From a thematic standpoint, this campaign will be rooted in a sense of optimism, and celebration. The past year has been challenging and uncertain for all of us, and while so many things have changed, some things never will - including the power of human connection that we see during the Euros. How we connect may look a little different now, but PayPal wants to focus on these shared moments of celebration and positivity, and demonstrate how they can be a uniquely relevant and reassuring force against the context of the Euros. By providing people with digital solutions to buy products online, send or receive money to/from family & friends, and even support local causes & organizations - PayPal is helping to keep us connected and in the moment, no matter what.

PAST VIDEOS FOR REFERENCE: These videos reflect the more sentimental tone of the holiday season, but were produced with a similar campaign director project structure and budget, and they generally reflect the live-action approach that we may take here, although we anticipate much more energy, as well as additional cast, and potentially more than 1 locations (especially for the hero). PayPal loves the authentic emotional component in the hero here, and in these in general.

KEY VIDEO MESSAGES/PRODUCTS:  Coming together to celebrate is made easy with PayPal. Convenient, fast & secure checkout at a range of Merchants, plus a range of products to enhance your experience.

  • Hero / Brand Video - a celebration of the PayPal brand & the campaign themes; functionality in this video should feature PayPal Checkout

  • Checkout (XO) / Product Video – A separate video from the hero, this video should specifically show how PayPal allows you to quickly and securely for the things you want

  • Person to Person Transfers (P2P) / Product Video – Securely send money to friends & family for free, domestically or internationally

  • Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) / Product Video – Spread the cost of your big purchases over multiple installments

  • Donate / Product Video – Support your community or cause by donating with PayPal

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS: Prior to shooting, filmmakers must receive the below approvals from the Sponsor.

  • SCRIPT: This project requires script approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your scripts and ask you to submit new versions. There may be several rounds of feedback until scripts are approved by the Sponsor.
  • STORYBOARD: This project requires storyboard approval before filmmakers move onto the Video Phase. The Sponsor may provide feedback on your storyboards and ask you to submit new versions.

  • WARDROBE: This project requires wardrobe approval. You will need to submit descriptions and/or pictures of your cast’s wardrobe. You must submit at least two wardrobe options per role. If the Sponsor does not approve either of your options for a role, you may be asked to submit two new wardrobe options.

For your convenience, we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion.
