I was just about to upload my entry for the Tyson contest when I saw the note that says that...

"Films must not contain any copyrighted material (including copyrighted background music)"

I shot some of my video at a food drive/halloween party and there was a stereo playing in the background. The music is only heard in a few clips. I could cut those clips but their loss would really hurt the final video. The music is hard to hear and the songs are not identifiable. Is there a way I can upload my video and then be notified as to whether or not it violates the rules?

Can I enter 2 versions of the same video? Maybe I can do one complete version and one version where I try and remove all the clips that have music in the background.

Ok, I submitted the original version of the video this morning. I talked to the person who's house we filmed at and he said several of the songs you briefly hear in the video are by a local chicago vampire-themed band and one of the people featured in the short knows the band well. So we can get permission for their songs if need be. The other songs in the background are pretty soft and aren't really recognizable. So hopefully this version is ok. I'd really appreciate it if someone could check it out and let me know if I'm in the clear.

Just to be on the safe side, I edited a second version with the shots that have background music cut out but the piece is a lot weaker I think. I tried to upload it just now and I got a message saying that I had reached my upload limit for this contest. But i only uploaded one video so far.

Dan, I watched the video and I don't think that bg music is an issue. I will defer to the folks at Tyson Foods on this and if need be, we'll facilitate the edited video.

Best, J
