What do you think about film festivals? Have you worked on a film that was accepted into a festival before, and if so, how was your experience attending as a filmmaker? Which festivals have you had the best experiences with and why? If you've been through the cycle of submitting a film to festivals, what did you learn and what would you do differently for next time?

We have a lot of experience entering and participating in festivals of all types if anyone needs help or has questions about the process feel free to contact me! One big tip- definitely use Film Freeway to enter when you can- so much easier than WithoutABox. Some of the bigger festivals like SXSW require you enter through their website so make sure you check.

Here’s a great blog post that Marissa wrote about some under-the-radar (but awesome!) film festivals:  https://tongal.com/blog/articles/didnt-get-into-sundance-try-these-10-film-festivals

I think schools should be teaching students more about websites like Tongal and OnlineVideoContests.com rather than focusing on film festivals. After graduation, I was hammered with Kickstarter links from friends wanting to make passion projects to submit to festivals. As a form of entertainment, local film festivals are able to give you an experience you can't get anywhere else. It's an up close and personal look at some raw films the majority of the World will never see. At the same time, I feel like film festivals have become a crutch for so many creative people. Rather than moving to NYC/LA or getting a job in the industry, they get comfortable submitting to the local festivals and working part-time in jobs that can accommodate their filming schedules. That's why I wish schools focused more on the profitable side of the industry rather than dedicating so much time and resources on the fun side of things like Film Festivals. You don't see many colleges willingly to sign up for Tongal profiles to help kids pay off their Student Loans, but every single one of them has their own film festival.

Don't get me wrong, I love film festivals...I've just seen plenty of friends alienate the people around them and ruin their careers chasing Film Festivals.
