We are this close to ending polio, a crippling disease that affects mostly children under five. To help us reach the end, Rotary—one of the world’s largest community-based humanitarian organizations– created a campaign called Make History Today: End Polio Now. Participants can quickly and easily take actions to help end this cruel and paralyzing– but totally preventable– disease in our lifetime.
When Rotary and its partners launched a global fight to end polio in 1985, polio was present in close to 200 nations, with 350,000 polio cases worldwide. Since then, the number of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to three, and polio cases have dropped to less than 250 last year. The literal end of polio, only the second disease ever to be eradicated, is very much in sight!
Each action taken by the public gets us one step closer to the goal. Many have joined the movement by joining the "World’s Biggest Commercial" to raise awareness, including 100+ celebrities and 38,000+ participants from countries across the world.
Rotary remains committed to the fight until every child is safe from this horrible disease. Right now, at 99% of the way there, we are this close to eradicating polio and wiping out this terrible disease for good. Which is why Rotary needs your help, Tongal!
The Challenge: Create a one to three-minute inspirational video that reaches out to Millennials and young professionals and conveys “Hey, polio still exists and YOU can be the generation responsible for ending it! Help make history today! Raise awareness and eradicate polio worldwide by spreading the word: share this video, donate, and join Rotary in this fight at endpolionow.org.”
It’s like a kickstarter campaign that’s almost funded… this is YOUR chance to push it past the goal line and save children from a crippling disease. As long as polio is present, children around the world are at-risk, especially in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the last three nations where polio has never been stopped. This is YOUR shot to make a difference and be the generation that eradicates the second human disease in the history of the world (after smallpox). Outbreaks continue to threaten previously polio-free countries; a resurgence could paralyze 200,000 per year by 2022 – and affect 10 million children in the next 40 years. But with a final push and a call for worldwide collaboration, we can eradicate polio by 2018. Rally around Rotary, its partners and nations of the world and get us there. Make history today, and help create the roadmap for solving the next global health issue, such as AIDS or clean water.
The goal of this project is to create a 1 - 3 minute inspirational video that illustrates the story of polio: showing that it still exists, but the world is this close to eradicating the disease. Drive Millennials and young professionals to share the video, donate or join Rotary at endpolionow.org. Your video should empower them to take action to end polio by reassuring them that their contribution makes a difference and that ending polio will be an amazing accomplishment—one of the greatest of mankind-- and will impact everyone’s future.
Communicate: Make history today! Join us to finish the fight and eradicate polio worldwide once and for all.
Call to Action: Be a part of history….share this video, donate, and join the fight at EndPolioNow.org.
Your video should tell a story and connect emotionally with the viewer. It should invoke feelings of inspiration, pride, collaboration, and unlimited potential for Millennials to conquer future diseases and societal issues, and most importantly, the feeling of being a part of huge accomplishment and historical milestone. Content should convey that this achievement will literally change history and serve as the roadmap to conquer the next global health issue. Your video can mention resurgence of polio and its effect on young children, but it should ultimately focus on the positive impending accomplishment.
-- Key Marketing Message:
• We are “this close” to a future without polio- no child has to suffer from this preventable disease again.
• We’re at a tipping point – we need to finish the job or risk resurgence.
• Since launching the global fight against polio in 1985, Rotary has helped reduce the number of cases from 350,000 to 250 and will remain committed to the fight until every child is safe from the disease.
• 99% of the world – including India – becoming polio-free demonstrates that it is feasible to eradicate the disease.
• Global Polio Eradication Initiative has a clear “Endgame Strategy” to eradicate polio:
- Requires additional funding to help immunize and protect millions and millions of children in the world still at risk
- Every dollar donated helps the cause
- Only $.60 can provide a vaccination to protect a child from this crippling disease
-- Executional Mandatories:
• Must mention Rotary at least once.
• Must include call-to-action “Make history today….share, donate and learn more at EndPolioNow.org.”
• Must reference “this close” and 99% of the way to worldwide eradication of polio.
-- Target Audience: Young professionals (18 – 35), globally. This younger audience needs to be educated about this important health issue that this generation has been mostly immune to—but was very real to their grandparents and could make a resurgence if we don’t finish the fight.
-- Tone: Videos should invoke feelings of inspiration, pride, collaboration, unlimited potential for Millennials to conquer future diseases and societal issues, and most importantly, the feeling of being a part of huge accomplishment and historical milestone. Content should convey that this achievement will literally change history. Videos can mention resurgence of polio but should ultimately focus on the positive impending accomplishment.
-- Exposure: Intended for use in social media, website and blog content, potentially shown at fundraising events, incorporated into multimedia historical archives.
-- Assets: Sponsor may upload B-roll, videos, and photos under the "Assets Tab"
This project will be worth a total of $35,000 and consist of three phases, an Idea Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.
PHASE 1: IDEA – Tell us your Idea for an End Polio Now: Make History Today Video in 140 characters or less. Remember, an Idea (What is an Idea Phase?) is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video. As always, Ideas should be clever and engaging. FOUR (4) winning Idea creators will each receive $250 and a 5% one-time residual payment for every winning Video their Idea is used to generate. (That means if your winning Idea is the basis for the 1st place Video, you will receive $750, the 2nd place Video $500, the 3rd place Video $250) – see Video Phase Payout details below.
PHASE 2: PITCH – Using text (500 characters or less), images (storyboards), video, and external links (to other supporting assets, i.e., your reel, etc.), give us your Pitch (What Is a Pitch Phase?) for how YOU would go about producing a 1 to 3 minute video based on one of the winning Ideas. The TWO (2) most compelling Pitches will be selected and will receive $2,000 to help create their Video. Those winners (upon submitting their Winner's Affidavit and IP Assignment) will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase. So, if your Pitch is selected and you submit a video during the Video Phase, you will win an additional $5,000, at a minimum, and have a chance to compete for the $15,000 first place Video prize (subject to deduction for one-time 5% residual payment). Remember your Pitch can include any, and all, of the assets mentioned above and you MUST include a link to some of your previous video work on Tongal or elsewhere to be considered for this phase. For an example of an effective pitch, check out Erik Beck’s “5,000 LEGOs, Unlimited Inspiration” Pitch. All Pitches will remain private until after the winners of the Video Phase are announced and the Project is complete. Keep in mind, if you don’t win the Pitch Phase or choose not to create a Pitch, you will still have the opportunity to create and submit a “Wild Card” Video.
PHASE 3: VIDEO – The TWO (2) winners from the Pitch Phase will create a 1 to 3 minute video based upon their winning Pitches, and all other creators are invited to enter a “Wild Card” (What Is a Wildcard?) submission that is not based on any winning material from the previous phases. The Judges will score all Wild Card Videos and the ONE (1) highest scoring Wild Card Video and the TWO (2) winning Videos submitted by Pitch winners will be scored to determine the standings for the Video Phase. Remember, the TWO Pitch winners, along with ONE non-Pitch Video creator, will receive prizes.
--Video Phase Payout: Winners of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes: 1st place $15,000, 2nd place $10,000, 3rd place $5,000 (less any 5% one-time residual payments paid to Idea winners, as applicable).
