The Creatures Behind the Best Fiends Video Series
Pitch
09/05/17 - 09/18/17

Create a Series of playful and humorous short videos that teach people about the real world creatures behind the characters of Best Fiends!

All was quiet in the land of Minutia... until a meteor struck Mount Boom, and the slugs awoke, devouring everything in their path!  Our heroes – the Best Fiends – had to rise up and fight against the ravenous slugs.

Welcome to the world of the Best Fiends – mythical, mischievous little creatures who, in a desperate race against slime, must build a courageous team of friends to help take down the army of Slugs that has been rampaging across the land.  If you haven’t played the mobile game Best Fiends yet, you probably should – it’s a stunning and addictive blend of puzzles and adventures with RPG-style character building, and it’s got a huge fan-base, with millions of players around the world.

Within the game, players collect the many different little Fiends, leveling them up to discover special powers and unique personalities – but many players don’t realize that the Best Fiends are actually inspired by a real animal species. The creatures behind these Fiends range from common houseflies (Brittle) to wild undersea dragon slugs (Bo) and exotic island primate tarsiers (Wu).

To connect with fans in an exciting, new way, the Best Fiends team is asking YOU for a Series of humorous short Videos that can playfully teach players about the species that have inspired the mischievous little creatures known as “Fiends.”

WHAT TO SUBMIT:

REQUIRED IN YOUR PITCH

  • Concept
  • Treatment
  • Links to Previous Work
  • Proposed Budget per Episode (*See Budget Template in the Assets Tab)
    • Instead of us dictating your budgets, we’re looking for you to let us know the amount you need in order to execute your Series.  Please provide explicitly how much you need per episode.
    • Your budget proposal is subject to approval if your Pitch is selected.
    • Please consider the most economical way to produce your Series, and keep in mind that if you provide optional elements that affect how high or how low you can go, we’d suggest including a budget range as well.
    • While Tongal will provide a library from which the Pitch Winner can source stock footage, we’d encourage you to put aside a line item for stock footage in your budget in the event that more needs to be purchased.
    • Feel free to include a timeline and how you might approach delivering your episodes in batches to increase efficiency.

Check out more details below!

The goal is to create a playful and humorous Series of short Videos that educate players about the real species that have inspired the characters of Best Fiends, and connect the game and its characters to the world in which we live. Best Fiends plans to actually link to these videos from the character pages in the game itself, so that people can instantly learn more about the characters they’re playing – that means your audience is any of the millions of players within the worldwide Best Fiends community, ranging from kids to players over 65.

Creatively, because it’s obviously difficult to go out into the world and find undersea dragon slugs, and because we still want actual footage of these real life creatures, Best Fiends imagines that most of your Video will be made up of stock footage and pre-existing imagery. They also see it as being driven by a strong yet humorous narrator who can capture the silly tone, and help communicate “fun facts” and lessons, which you can then reinforce with on-screen graphics and text.

There’s still a lot of latitude in how you interpret those considerations, and though this isn’t exactly what they have in mind, check out these links as thought starters:

We’re essentially looking for your ability to locate and identify great footage, edit well, and execute a repeatable format in the fun and playful tone of Best Fiends.  Tongal will provide a library for the Pitch Winner from which they will be able to source stock footage.  Keep in mind: while Tongal has these resources, we’d encourage you to put aside a line item in your budget proposal for stock footage in the event that additional footage beyond the scope of our agreement needs to be purchased.

Each Video should be between 1:30 to 3:00 in length, and each Video should be accompanied by a social cut-down up to 15 seconds in length, and two (2) still images.

PILOT PHASE NOTE: For the Pilot Phase, one filmmaker will be selected to create a Video about the real animal behind one Fiend. There will be pre-production before the Pilot AND before the Series. In addition to the main cut, the filmmaker will be still be required to deliver a 15 second cut-down and two (2) still images for the Pilot. These Pilots will include the intro/outro cards. After this, all remaining episodes in the Series will be modeled and formatted after the Pilot episode.

PRE-PRODUCTION NOTE: This project includes a Pre-Production Phase (What is a Pre-Production Phase?), but no specific approvals. After the Pitch Winner is selected, there will be Pre-Production calls to discuss and align on the creative approach, and distribute all necessary audio and visual assets required for production, after which the Best Fiends team will give a greenlight for commencement of the Video Phase.

IMPORTANT: You may not begin shooting your Pilot or Series until you receive a greenlight from the Best Fiends team. If you begin shooting your Pilot or Series during the Pre-Production, there is a chance you will need to reshoot (at your own expense), so please don’t jump the gun.

--Deliverables Due:

  • In Pilot Phase:
    • 1 Video (approximately 1:30-3:00)
    • :15 Cut-Down
    • 2 Still Images
    • 1 Bookended intro/outro card
  • In Series Phase:
    • 30 Total Videos (approximately 1:30-3:00 each)
    • 30 Total Teaser Cut-Downs (approximately: 15)
    • 60 Total Still Images (2 images per episode)
    • 30 Bookended intro/outro cards

--Executional Mandatories:

Keep it PG.

Though many of the creatures that inspire the Best Fiends may be threatened or endangered, this isn’t about bringing attention to their cause, so you can mention their status, but you shouldn’t focus on it.

--Executional Considerations:

The Best Fiends team will provide you with:

  • Character and graphic assets to reference or incorporate into your video, as well as fonts.
  • Music and sound effect assets. If possible, you should avoid incorporating outside music, but if you need to supplement with other music, please refer to our music libraries outlined below.
  • An Intro and End-card with gameplay and/or a call-to-action to download the game, which will be customized around your Video’s format.

--Target Audience:

  • Primary Audience: Current players (for engagement & re-engagement)
  • Best Fiends players are 60% female, mostly 25-45, and their social audience is also predominantly female. They have a strong following in families, the LGBT community, lifestyle artists, make-up, beauty, and fashion. Players are culturally diverse and global.
  • Secondary: Future players (acquisition & affinity)

--Tone:

This should be humorous and entertaining, but still educational and full of interesting facts. Think “Minions” in tone – fun and funny, subversive yet sweet, playful and positive.  Check out Ozzy Man Reviews, and think of mixing that with the educational components of Steve Irwin and Captain Planet.

--Exposure & Format:

  • The content will live primarily on YouTube, and the Best Fiends team intends to drive player to these videos from the fiend’s profiles in the Best Fiends App itself. Thus, it is organic content for engaged players of Best Fiends, so you should not structure your series like an advertisement.  Cut-downs and still images are for Facebook & Instagram.
  • As this is not a proper advertisement, you have flexibility with the duration of your video, though it should still fall somewhere within the range of 1:30 – 3:00 minutes.

Tentative Pilot timeline:

Pre-Production: 9/25-9/29

Pilot Production: 9/29-10/6

Pilot Delivered to Tongal: 10/6

Pilot Delivered to Sponsor: 10/10

Sponsor Feedback on Pilot Due: 10/13

Pilot Revisions: 10/13-10/19

Final Pilot delivered to Sponsor: 10/20

Series Timeline: TBD

This Project will consist of 3 main Phases: a Pitch Phase, a Pilot Phase, and a Series Phase.  Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: PITCH – Submit your Pitch convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute this Series.  Please be sure to provide your vision for the Pilot AND ability to execute the entirety of the Series.

  • Text (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less synopsizing how you plan to approach and execute the Pilot and Series.
  • Treatment (REQUIRED): A detailed narrative description of what’s going to happen in your Pilot.  Please focus on the pilot and how you would structure it.  This format will then be repeated across all the other videos in the Series.
  • Budget (REQUIRED): Tell us your budget per episode.  Feel free to also use the template we’ve provided in the Assets tab.
  • Links (REQUIRED): To your previous video work.  Please specify your role (producer, director, cinematography, etc.) and DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO YOUR SHOWREEL. Please link to individual videos.
  • Headshots/Casting Boards (Optional): Casting notes or concepts, headshots of actors, etc.
  • Script (Optional): This should include dialogue from the videos you intend to create.
  • Pitch Video (Optional): This is your opportunity to show us what you’re capable of. Consider submitting a Pitch video in which you tell the Sponsor what they can expect should they choose your Pitch. Also, test videos, animatics, etc. are welcome.

The one (1) most compelling Pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, and after a period of budget negotiation, will continue on to create their Pilot and Series.

For an example of an effective Pitch, check out Erik Beck’s winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch  video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 2: PRE-PRODUCTION – The one (1) winner from the Pitch Phase will enter into a brief pre-production period consisting of a discussion with the brand to make sure everyone is aligned on the direction of the Pilot before beginning Pilot production.

PHASE 3: PILOT – The one (1) winner from the Pitch Phase will create an approximately 1:30-3:00 Pilot based upon their winning Pitch, plus a :15 cut down, 2 still images, and 1 bookended intro/outro.

PHASE 4: PRE-PRODUCTION – After the one (1) winner’s Pilot is approved, then they will enter into another pre-production period before beginning Series production.  Again, this is to make sure all details are ironed out before jumping into a series of episodes all based on the format of the Pilot.

PHASE 5: SERIES – The one (1) winner will create the remaining 30 episodes of the Series, including 30 :15 cut-downs, 60 still images (two per video), and 30 bookended intro/outro cards.
