Some companies are in the business of innovating products and features made for problems that don’t really exist. Have the electronic cereal dispenser, the wine glass holder necklace, butter glue stick, or the Snuggie made our lives better? True innovation, on the other hand, makes our lives and use of products significantly better. Think about it—we had wheels for +5,000 years and luggage (in one form or another) for about the same. But some genius combined the two and getting through the airport is an exponentially better experience. Simple, right?

Take Sears, for example. The business has tirelessly innovated in the appliance space for the past eight decades. Innovations that solve actual problems, that simplify, and that make our lives better. Sears’ current campaign sheds some light on these new features and they are turning to the Tongal community to help create a digital companion campaign.

The goal is to play with broader comical moments beyond the appliances themselves. For example, one of these new features is a refrigerator that heats water to the exact temperature you specify and dispenses it through the door. Your video can be about anything that can go wrong when you are not precise or exact enough. Situations do NOT have to incorporate appliances in any way.  (Please see the Objectives section for the specific appliance features and the larger comic concepts they relate back to.)

Ideas and Videos do NOT have to feature appliances, in fact we’d prefer if they have nothing to do with appliances. A branded bumper highlighting the relevant feature will be provided. This is your opportunity to freely create a clever and engaging piece of comedy for one of America’s most venerable retailers.

The goal of this project is to create a 30-60 second humorous and entertaining video based on one of the below comical concepts. For reference we’ve also included the specific feature that this concept will be linked to in the branded bumper.  However, as stated in the Background, videos do not have to integrate appliances in any way.

Comical concept: What can go wrong when large things have to fit into small places?

Related feature:  A Dishwasher that has a top rack that easily adjusts up or down to accommodate tall items on the top shelf.

Comical concept: What can go wrong when you are not precise or exact enough?

Related feature:  A Refrigerator that heats water to the exact temperature and dispenses it through the door.

Comical concept: What can go wrong when you try to do two things at the same time?

Related feature:  A freestanding cooking range that has two ovens and can cook two separate full sized meals at the same time, at different temperatures.

*Please note this project takes place over a truncated timeline outlined below:

Idea Phase: 10/11 - 10/14

Pitch Phase: 10/17 - 10/21

Video Phase: 10/23 - 11/11

--Target Audience: Home owners that are currently in or will soon be in the appliance market.

--Tone: Funny and clever.

--Executional Mandatories:

• Capture the viewer’s interest early.

• Comical situations must be based on one of the provided concepts.

--Exposure: Sears’ social channels

This project will be worth a total of $50,000 and consists of three phases: an Idea Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: IDEA  – Tell us your Idea for a Sears appliance video in 140 characters or less.  Remember, an Idea (What is an Idea Phase?) is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video.  As always, Ideas should be clever and engaging.  The winning Idea creators will receive $250 each and a 5% one-time residual payment for the winning Video their Idea is used to generate. (That means if your winning Idea is the basis for the 1st place Video, you will receive $1,000, the 2nd place Video $500, the 3rd place Video $450, and the 4th place Video $287.50 – see Video Phase Payout details below.)

PHASE 2: PITCH – Using text (500 characters or less), images (storyboards), video, and external links (to other supporting assets, i.e., your reel, etc.), give us your Pitch (What Is a Pitch Phase?) for how YOU would go about producing a 30-60 second video based on the information contained herein. The 3 most compelling Pitches will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will each receive$1,500 to help create the Video.  Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winners will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase.  So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an additional $5,750 at a minimum, and have a chance to compete for the $20,000  First Place video prize (subject to deduction for one-time 5% residual payment to eligible Idea winners). For an example of an effective pitch, check out Erik Beck’s winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch.  All Pitches will remain private until after the winners of the Video Phase are announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – The winner from the Pitch Phase will create a 30-60 second video based upon their winning Pitch. All other creators are invited to enter a “Wild Card” (What Is a Wildcard?)  The Judges will score all Wild Card Videos and the one highest scoring Wild Card Video and the Videos submitted by the Pitch winners will be scored to determine the standings for the Video Phase.  Remember, the three Pitch winners, along with one non-Pitch Video creator, will receive prizes.

--Video Phase Payout: Winners of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes: 1st  place $20,000, 2nd place $10,000, 3rd place $9,000, 4th place $5,750  (less any 5% one-time residual payments paid to Idea winners, as applicable).

-- Music: Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Audiosocket, Killer Tracks and Music Dealers. Any of which can be used to source music for your Video submission to this Project. You may use up to THREE total tracks per Video submission, and they can come from any of the three providers listed above. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using each of these music providers, click on any of the provider’s names above.
