Global New Years Eve Concept Project
Concept
10/01/20 - 10/05/20

Share a clever and inventive concept for a video about different people using PayPal to send each other money video for New Years Eve.

For the Red Envelope tradition that's a part of the Chinese New Year, people customarily give gifts of money to their close friends and family as a sign of gratitude, or as a blessing for good fortune in the coming year. In recent times, that tradition has become increasingly digital, but hasn't spread beyond China. This year, PayPal is looking to create an inventive and inspirational :30 video about some kind of New Years Eve person-to-person money transfers between family or friends located in different places - very similar to the Red Envelope - but targeting western audiences. We don't quite know what that transfer involves, so we're turning to you.

The motivation is that when you send money on PayPal, you can add character to it by including a playful illustration, animation, or GIF from PayPal's "Themes" library. You can review some example themes HERE, but PayPal's going to add new themes for New Years Eve too. Ultimately, we want to show NYE themes in action, but that means we need to show people sending money to each other from ALL over the globe - in a way that's inspirational, relatable, and worth actually doing yourself. Are we creating a new tradition? Maybe. It's all going to tie into PayPal's campaign tagline: "Let's make it one to remember."

We know that themes solve two key customer needs related to person-to-person transfers: they help communicate purpose, and emotion. Maybe that helps solve the problem. Here are a couple other creative considerations and challenges that you'll have to help us sort out with your concept:

  • Why would someone send money on New Years Eve, when they've already shared gifts with friends and family during other winter holidays? And is your reason believable? i.e. would you do it?
  • Why are people sending money instead of making a purchase, or sending a gift? Is it timing and logistics? Is it impractical to send a gift?
  • Who are you sending money to, and how much? On Venmo, people often sent their friends penny pokes.
  • How do we show people of all types sending money to each other? This can't just be about parents and grandparents sending money. It's gotta be friends, young or old, aspirational or well off, etc.

EXPOSURE: Videos will be distributed globally across multiple channels and platforms, including: Instagram (key social focus), Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, as well as other owned channels and paid media.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • PayPal's primary targets are young professionals - under 30, digital savvy - and parents, early 30's to mid-40’s.
  • Concepts should also work for a global audience, and not feel too closely tied to an "American" experience.

TONE:

  • Positive, relatable, authentic, inclusive, optimistic, humble, clever - with a hint of charm and wit.
  • The brand itself values: integrity, trust, respect, empathy, collaboration, inclusion

Tell us your Concept in 250 characters or less. Remember, a Concept is not a detailed script — it is a spark of inspiration or a distillation of what will happen in the videos. As always, Concepts should be emotional, clever, and engaging.

The 5 greenlit concept creators will receive $250 each. Should your concept be selected, you must complete the Winner’s Affidavit and IP Assignment forms in order to receive payment.
