The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
General Conference Concept Project
Concept
10/04/22 - 10/12/22

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is seeking concepts for novel, unique, and inspirational videos series that will connect its target audience with the messages of their bi-annual General Conference.

General Conference is the worldwide gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, happening twice a year, during the first weekend of April and the first weekend of October. During General Conference, Church leaders from around the world share messages and sermons that are streamed and broadcast live globally in about 70 languages, and later translated into more than 100 total languages.

The Church already has plenty of traditional video and livestream coverage in place for this event, but now they're looking for creative and unexpected out-of-the-box concepts that could serve as inspiration for long-form episodic video content, primarily for YouTube (8-12 minutes in length). They're hoping to create novel, unique, and inspirational series that will connect their target audience - adults in the 18 to 30 age range - with the messages of General Conference, and they want the concepts for these series to have legs that can sustain the content for multiple seasons/years. The goal is to extend the reach of, and engagement with, the General Conference messages of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the 6 months after General Conference and prior to the next General Conference weekend.

When we say "out-of-the-box," we mean it. Don't think of typical church content - we are looking for concepts that could be cool and original as any other YouTube content you might engage with. So whether your concept involves a cooking show, ASMR, celebrity interviews, stop motion animation, or even something with someone live-streaming a video game as they comment on the messaging - don't limit your concepts to what the Church has created before, or to whatever might feel really "expected."

EXPOSURE:

TARGET AUDIENCE: Young Adults 18-30

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • The Church is looking for “outside the box” ideas, and they are hoping to see more creative approaches than the mere mashups or reenactments they've done in the past, so you should avoid concepts they've done previously unless you have a clever new spin.
  • Concepts DO NOT have to mention General Conference specifically
  • Concepts DO NOT have to include a speaker at General Conference at the pulpit or his/her voice. Pulpit shots should even be avoided generally.

The concepts you submit should ultimately convey one or more of the Church’s foundational messages [here].  This would be done ideally with a creative approach that utilizes one of the Universal Values [here] as a primary theme as these have been identified as values that are relatable to everyone regardless of background and represent values that people are seeking.

To develop your concepts, you may want to select one or two of the sample General Conference talks provided [here]. Notated under each are the foundational messages and universal values it links to. Create concepts that will showcase those messages and universal values while ideally incorporating a key message of the specific talk as the main thematic thread in your concept.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your submission:

  • CONCEPT (REQUIRED): Tell us about your concept using up to 250 characters. Remember that a concept is not a detailed script — it is a spark of inspiration or distillation of what will happen. As always, concepts should be clever and engaging.

  • HELPFUL REFERENCE LINKS (Optional): Have you seen another idea, video, or marketing activation that you think makes for a helpful reference? Feel free to include a link to any existing content that'll be useful when trying to understand your concept.

Five concept submissions will be selected and receive $300 each. Five additional concept submissions will be selected for Honorable Mention, and will receive $50 each. Submissions selected for Honorable Mention will not be used by the client, and not all submissions identified as finalists will receive an Honorable Mention.

Should your concept be selected, you must complete the Winner Affidavit and IP Assignment forms in order to receive payment. All submitters will also receive an automated email notification when a selection has been announced. To ensure that you’re receiving project updates, review your email settings to check that you haven't unsubscribed.
