Cinematic Stories of Winter Wonderland Concepting Project
Concept
11/20/19 - 12/02/19

Develop a cinematic concept for the origin story of London's epic Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Christmas Festival.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is THE Christmas festival of Europe, and there's no other carnival or fair like it anywhere in the world. It is an immersive, and truly "magical" experience. With over 150 twinkling market chalets, 70 funfair rides, the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink, a Giant Wheel, an ice sculpture exhibition, 80 food and drink stalls, and 5 indoor shows, it's a massive multicultural celebration of the winter holidays. In a recent project we asked you to create an origin story for this magical world, but in the process we saw a lot of concepts that felt just like some of our favorite holiday movies, and now, we want to run with that.

If there's an original movie that could explain the origin of Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, what would that movie be?

Is it something like The Polar Express? Miracle on 34th Street? The Christmas Carol? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Or maybe something comedic like Elf? We've offered important guidance in the Tone and Executional Mandatories section below, so check that out, and then dive into the Background/Additional Details for more on Winter Wonderland.

DELIVERABLES: 500 character concepts for a cinematic origin story for Hyde Park Winter Wonderland.

EXPOSURE: The concepts may inspire all sorts of content for Winter Wonderland: marketing materials, exhibits and events at the park, social media communications, character creation, maybe even an actual movie.

TARGET AUDIENCE: All "four quadrants;" i.e. not just families, but men and women, over and under 25, with or without children. This should connect with people from all demographics and from many different countries.

TONE: Magical, imaginative, mysterious, nostalgic, festive, exciting, joyful; but also inclusive, accepting & heartfelt. It can be comedic, or epic, or fantastical.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • Focus on Winter rather than Christmas, and avoid any overtly religious themes or storylines.
  • Consider leaning into traditional European cultural or historical references. Not just English traditions, because many cultures are represented in Winter Wonderland, and the festival brings together art, food, experiences, and people from all over the world.
  • Avoid "real world" origin stories; i.e. this should not be about real estate developers, corporate executives, or business decisions.
  • Avoid anything that incorporates royalty or the British crown.
  • Avoid anything that feels like Harry Potter or that plays on Harry Potter's association with England; no wizards or witches unless they're incredibly original.
  • Try to incorporate Hyde Park itself as part of the story; Hyde Park is the largest park in London and is known as the people's park, with 350 acres of green space, trees, and gardens.

Developing a cinematic concept to explain Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is about more than coming up with a logline for a  cool holiday movie - this has to be a story that explains how and why Winter Wonderland came into existence as the magical place that it is, where people from many different cultures and many different backgrounds come together to celebrate Winter.

It might help to include some artwork or references for inspiration, so feel free to include that with your submission.

Then, a few thought starters to consider:

  • Who or what is responsible for the creation of the park?
  • Was there an event that preceded the creation of the park?
  • What were things like before the park?
  • Who are the characters in the park?
  • Is there something physical that's part of the story that they can incorporate into the park?
  • What makes something like the Magical Ice Kingdom magical?
  • Where do the different parts of the park come from?

It's important that you're familiar with Winter Wonderland, so check out this video, and some of the many things to do below:

Originating as a small market and ice rink, over the last decade Hyde Park Winter Wonderland has grown from a small market to a wintery extravaganza, with millions now making it part of their annual festive tradition. Winter Wonderland captures everything that is the Christmas spirit. An event that’s packed full of nostalgic excitement, rosy cheeks, cinnamon smells and firmly upheld family traditions. It has all of the fun of a fair, but with the world's largest transportable roller coast, a massive ice rink around a Victorian bandstand, two indoor venues with over 500 performances, carefully curated market stalls with hundreds of artisans and crafters, daring acrobatic feats and cosy alpine chalets – ensuring that there really is something for everyone. In 2018, it welcomed over 3.7 million visitors over 45 days.

In order to be considered, you must include the below materials in your initial Concept submission.
