In this far-reaching global economy where products can come from just about anywhere, the phrase “Built in the USA” has taken on added importance. Oral-B’s Iowa City manufacturing facility has been producing toothbrushes since 1958. During these five plus decades, Oral-B has developed deep roots in the community and has continually turned down the allure of cheaper foreign manufacturing costs to stay in this quintessential American town.
Oral-B is now turning to the Tongal community to tell the story of the dedicated U.S. workers who make these high-quality manual toothbrushes and the enduring relationship between a business and a community. Through documentary storytelling the selected Tongal filmmaker will show how being “Built in the USA” distinguishes Oral-B toothbrushes from its competitors and how the long-lasting relationship between Oral-B and the residents of Iowa City has been essential to the brand’s continued success.
The goal of this project is to create a 3-4 minute documentary (along with two 30 second pullouts and two 15 second pullouts) that details the positive impact the Oral-B facility has had on the Iowa City community and the great pride its employees take in producing a high quality and superior product. The filmmaker must have the proven skillset to tell a compelling documentary style story and be able to spend several days filming at the Oral-B plant in Iowa City.
Videos must emphasize:
• That workers take tremendous pride in producing high-quality toothbrushes with superior materials.
• The Oral–B manufacturing facility has a long history in Iowa City and has remained loyal to the community.
• Oral-B toothbrushes are “Built in the USA.”
• Videos must include the Oral-B logo at the end. Please see the Assets tab for the Logo.
--Key Marketing Message: Oral-B toothbrushes are produced with superior materials by a highly dedicated and prideful U.S. based workforce.
--Target Audience: People who use manual toothbrushes and are unaware of where their toothbrush is made.
--Tone: Prideful, heartfelt, passionate, and innovative. It should have the feel of a trusted friend you would ask for advice.
This project will be worth a total of $25,000 and consist of two phases. Note that this tournament style process will progress differently from previous projects, so be sure to read the following information carefully.
PHASE 1: PITCH – Using text (500 characters or less), images (storyboards), video, and external links (to other supporting assets, i.e., your reel, etc.), give us your Pitch for how YOU would go about producing this video. The most compelling Pitch will be selected and that creator will receive a $5,000 production advance to help create his or her Video. Remember your Pitch can include any, and all, of the assets mentioned above, but you MUST include a link to some of your previous video work on Tongal or elsewhere to be considered for this phase. For an example of an effective pitch, check out check out Erik Beck’s winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch. All Pitches will remain private until after the winners of the Video Phase are announced and the Project is complete.
--Note: If you win the Pitch Phase, you will be required to make your own travel and hotel arrangements to be in Iowa City. The winning creator will be notified by 3/11 with the videos due on 4/15.
PHASE 2: VIDEO – The winning Pitch creator from the previous phase will utilize his or her $5,000 advance to produce a compelling 3-4 minute documentary about the Oral-B toothbrush factory in Iowa City (due on April 15th), as well as, two additional 30 second pullouts and two 15 second pullouts. Upon delivery of the finished videos, that creator will receive $20,000 compensation.
