Edit together a compilation video of eight animated scene recreations from Back to the Future using motion graphic transitions and end cards to bring everything together.

Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me it's been 35 years since Back to the Future first premiered?! Great Scott!!!

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Back to the Future franchise, Universal is inviting artists, animators, designers, and directors to recreate their favorite scenes from the first Back to the Future movie through animation and mixed media (and you can check out that project page HERE). Once those scenes are created, Universal needs an awesome editor/motion graphic designer to stitch them together in a flashy compilation video that'll get fans excited about the 35th anniversary of this iconic film franchise.

Universal will be able to provide some existing assets (i.e. fonts, logos, images, and approved music cues) to help create the video, but the greenlit editor will need the ability to build some graphic transitions and create an end card on their own. To suss out your skills, you will be required to submit a sample :05 end-card (16x9) in the Pitch Phase. For the purposes of the sample, use whatever Back to the Future content you want; the sample is more of a proof-of-concept, so it should be exciting and flashy, driving people to check out more 35th Anniversary content, and then you can update it later once we have all the assets you'll need. Universal will work closely with the greenlit editor on the end cards to confirm that the creative and style is in line with the rest of their 35th anniversary marketing.

DELIVERABLES:

  • One :05 end card (16x9, 1x1) delivered prior to the compilation
  • One 3-4 minute compilation video (16x9, 1x1)

TIMELINE:

EXPOSURE:

TARGET AUDIENCE: Fans of Back to the Future (...which is everyone, right?)

TONE: Celebratory, exciting, nostalgic, maybe a little mysterious, funny, or zany.

EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:

  • You will be required to submit a sample :05 end-card (16x9) as your sample video.
  • You should NOT use any actors' likenesses. Your character designs should NOT be recognizable versions of Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, or anyone else from the original cast. Highly stylized artistic representations of the characters are OK, as long as they do NOT look like the actors who portrayed them.
  • The Back to the Future theme song can be made available upon request at no charge. However, you CANNOT use any music from the soundtrack that hasn't been specifically provided and cleared by Universal. If you need supplemental music, you may source tracks from the Universal-approved music provider Frequency (see more details in the Payment & Project Requirements section).
  • All work MUST be original, and should NOT include or reference any other existing IP than Back to the Future. Any persons, places or things rendered should be of the artist’s own creation and should not be referential of other existing properties.
  • AVOID voiceover, unless it’s absolutely integral to the perspective of the storytelling in your video.

If you haven't seen Back to the Future, we're just gonna say it, you're a butthead... unless... are you stuck in 1955?!!?! That's heavy. Either way, to reignite your love of the iconic film, check out the original trailer.

If you're greenlit, Universal will provide you with fonts, logos, images, and approved music cues (from what we'd say is one of the greatest movie scores OF ALL TIME!) to help create your video.

The Back to the Future theme song can be made available upon request at no charge for the greenlit editor.

In order to be considered for this project, you must include the below materials in your pitch submission. For examples of effective pitches, check out this gallery.

  • TEXT (REQUIRED): 500 characters or less on why you'd be good for the job.

  • SAMPLE VIDEO (REQUIRED): Submit ONE :05 endcard. You may use the Back to the Future theme song, or other placeholder library music in your sample video.

  • LINKS (REQUIRED): To any relevant past video editing and motion graphic work.

The most compelling pitch will be greenlit, and upon completing the Winner Affidavit and the IP Assignment, the responsible creator will receive funding. Please note: the payment of the pitch funds is subject to a payment schedule determined by Tongal. Please see the full payment schedule in the Assets section.

REVISION REQUIREMENTS: Once the Video Phase has closed, the greenlit editor will enter the Revisions Phase. Filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.

MUSIC: You will be required to use the Universal-approved music provider Frequency to source music for your Video submission to this Project. Music from this provider is available only to the filmmakers that Universal selects at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate music release form. Filmmakers will be provided with a log-in and access by a Tongal producer once they are selected.

If you are selected as a filmmaker and choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our music release form.
