Made on Tongal: DC x Sonic Motion Comics

May 01, 2026

A new kind of crossover has raced onto screens this spring, as the speed of Sonic the Hedgehog collides with the power of the DC universe in a bold motion comic series debuting on the YouTube channels of DC and DC Kids. Blending the visual integrity of comic book art with the energy of animation, the DC x Sonic Motion Comics offer a fresh medium for audiences to experience this beloved IP.

The motion comics are created by Chase A Cloud, an independent, creator-led studio known for building visual storytelling universes. Since joining Tongal in 2016, the team has built a reputation for cross-media filmmaking. Their approach to the DC x Sonic series reflects that by honoring the source material while expanding its presentation for digital-first audiences.

With the first of five episodes premiering on the DC YouTube channel this week, the project celebrates the last year's high-profile comic book collaboration between SEGA, IDW Publishing, and Warner Bros./DC. The original crossover comic series — written by Ian Flynn and illustrated by Adam Bryce Thomas, both Sonic universe veterans — was an instant hit last year, which paved the way for this motion comic expansion.

“This is an incredibly cool comic book crossover, and it's hard not to fanboy out on something like this,” said Stephen Iwanyk, Director of Production at Tongal. “But trying to breathe life into a static medium like comic books is also an incredibly cool creative challenge. How do you stay true to the comic book medium, and to the original artwork, while still bringing in a ton of dynamic energy, and making sure that viewers on YouTube would fall in love with the series?”

That challenge became the foundation of the project’s creative ambition. Chase A Cloud set out to create something immersive, where movement, depth, and pacing enhance the storytelling without compromising the integrity of the original illustrations.

“You see a lot of different ‘motion comic’ executions out there on YouTube, but most of them are just read-alongs, and we wanted to do something different and special,” Iwanyk added. “We were thrilled that Warner Bros. gave us that opportunity, and even more so when we saw the creative approach that the Chase A Cloud team presented in their original pitch.”

According to Chase A Cloud project lead Vladislav Lakov, the process involved carefully reworking original comic panels to preserve the texture and authenticity while giving them fluid motion.

“I pitched the visual style and direction and then directed all the episodes,” Lakov shared. “In brief, everyone from the team who worked on it was really excited by the project. Probably the most challenging part of it was cutting out and drawing over the original comic book art. There's all sorts of fine craftsmanship techniques we had to employ to preserve the scanned grain and make it all feel congruent.”

The result is a layered visual experience where comic book pages feel tangible retaining their illustrative roots while gaining a new sense of motion and depth. It’s a delicate balance that underscores the importance of respecting original creators, including writers and artists behind the DC x Sonic comic series.

“I was happy to work on a project for two brands that I'm personally a big fan of,” Lakov added. “And that I got the chance to creatively contribute to a piece of art alongside Ian Flynn, Adam Bryce Thomas and all the other comic book legends behind the DC x Sonic series.”

For Tongal, the project represents another opportunity to collaborate within the world of fandom, innovation, and storytelling — and to extend the reach of beloved IP. Projects like this highlight the potential of motion comics as a hybrid storytelling format. By bridging the gap between comic illustration and full animation, the DC x Sonic series lets comic book storytelling evolve without losing what makes it special.

“Chase A Cloud has done a masterful job with these motion comics,” Iwanyk said. “The action and the characters feel so vibrant and energetic. The pages feel tangible and real, there's so much dimension and so much movement, but you never lose sight of the fact that this is a comic book you're looking at - not just some traditional animated piece.”

He continued, “It shows a lot of respect for the comic illustrators' beautiful work, especially the character designs and the big splashy moments that we feature. We're really grateful that the Warner Bros. and DC teams gave Chase A Cloud a lot of latitude with their approach, and that the Chase A Cloud team collaborated so well. We're psyched, and hope everyone enjoys it as much as we did!”

The DC x Sonic Motion Comics will roll out weekly on the DC & DC Kids YouTube channel throughout May.
