To honor Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Tongal is highlighting the achievements of women Creators in our community. These Creators are leading animated productions, making awesome commercials, and letting us into their worlds. Read to learn more.

Katie Anne Moy

Meet Katie Anne Moy – an actor, filmmaker, and business owner. Katie’s passion for entertainment began in her high school years. Acting, singing, and dancing in musicals would later open Katie’s eyes to the possibility of pursuing career directing and producing.Through her production company, Anemone, she creates commercials, branded content, music videos, and cinema. Since joining Tongal, Katie has collaborated with PayPal, T-Mobile, Bank of America, Warner Media, and National Geographic.

What keeps Katie Anne Moy motivated? You have to love what you do enough so that it makes certain sacrifices worth it. I’m always up for a challenge and approach things in life with a sense of gratitude, so even in the hardest of times, I can try to find a little piece of positivity. For example, if you’re stressing over a crazy deadline for a huge project, be grateful that this huge opportunity was given to you in the first place. There is someone else out there who would have loved the opportunity, so don’t take it for granted. (Voyage LA)

Good Golly

Say hello to Alexa Morita and Minhee Kang, a duo better known as Good Golly. Good Golly is a women-powered animation and directing team that is skilled in development, prop and set fabrication, stop motion, 2d animation and post. In 2013, Alex and Minhee met while they were studying animation at California Institute of the Arts. Their work reflects an appreciation for cartoons and animated films, artists like Mary Blair and Maurice Noble, and the city of Los Angeles.

How does Good Golly work together? Because we are a partnership, every step of the process is met with discussion and compromise. Generally we brainstorm together before narrowing down on one idea. From there we discuss execution. We decide on everything from shape, color, backgrounds, and lighting. From here, one of us will make a mock up, and once the general form is agreed upon, we build all the items. From there, we set up our trusty Canon 5D and shoot! (Ballpit Magazine)

James Kim

Introducing James Kim, a filmmaker with a background in directing, writing, editing, and sound design. James loves science fiction and fantasy genres. Since joining Tongal, James has collaborated with SYFY to tell a story about his lived experience as a child of immigrant parents. His animated short “Language Barrier” takes place in a fantasy East Asian world and revolves around a young boy who has a nasty spell cast upon him which prevents him from speaking with others.

What keeps James motivated? My day job is coordinating dubbing and subtitles at a localization company, but I've made it my mission to start my own production company so that I can begin working for myself.
