Where can we find the "Lego City Skyline" image? Thanks :)
Caleb Light-WillsHi Gail, you can find the "City Skyline" in the "assets" tab on the left-hand side of this page.

Asset files include city backgrounds like Photo_bg_1 3 4.jpg, is it possible to have them in hi-res? (now they are 640x453)
-
Maxwell Bottner
How come there are only five pitches chosen? Weren't there originally seven?
Caleb Light-WillsThere were always five pitch winners and seven video winners. Two of the video spots are reserved for Wildcards, i.e., people who did not participate or win in the Pitch phase, who still want to create a video.

So the video phase is in...why cant we see the submisions now? Some of us apparently had good ideas, and we're curious as to know what those other ideas were. Also, why are the winning subs private? I'm sure everyone would like to see those in particular.
Caleb Light-WillsAll Pitch submissions are kept private until the video phase closes in order to prevent information cascades.

I read on Tongal's payment t's & c's, and it said that all prize money can only be given out after the competition has ended, and on the first of the month.
If we win the pitch phase, will we get the $500 in time to use as funds for the video stage?
Caleb Light-WillsGenerally speaking, Tongal payments are issued on the first of the month, but we try to pay out Pitch winners as fast as possible for this exact reason...so that the money can be put toward the video.

I don't get it... how did the number of pitches submitted reach 130? it ended with 129 pitches.
Caleb Light-WillsThere was a technical error that caused one of the pitches not to come through completely...it was recently addressed.

I have two quesitons:
1. Is the $500 able to be used for a new camera/animation program/etc.?
2. If my pitch is selected, will I be able to post the completed video on my YouTube channel?
Thanks!
Caleb Light-WillsYou may use the production budget however you like. With respect to posting your video, you'll have to get approval from LEGO once it has been completed.

My guess is that maybe they weren't expecting quite this many pitches, and once they got started on judging, realized that they would need a bit more time. Whatever the case, I'm still looking forward to the results!

Does the "links to your previous video works" have to be videos that relate to the contest? Or is it just whatever film we've done before this?

according to the link you gave me a long time ago: http://city.lego.com /en-us/Products/Garb age+Truck/4432.aspx# 4431
there is a category "harbour" (harbor), can I include those sets in my movie and pitch? And what about the category: "Airport"? can I use that as well?LEGO City is busy. The police are looking for thieves, the fire brigade is on the move, the ambulance is off on rescue, the cargo train is fully loaded, and in the Airport the passenger plane is ready to take off. Will our pitches be judged on our previous video work? My only work is quite shaky because I don't have a tripod for my camera. I don't currently have the funds for a tripod, and was planning on using the pitch phase funds to get a tripod for my video submission, if I won the pitch phase.
Kab Productions
I know I can do better if I am able to have a more steady camera, but am unable to show this yet. Just wondering how much our submissions are judged on our previous work.
7:37AM Apr 22, 2012
Caleb Light-Wills@Kieren Barnett
Previous work is definitely taken into consideration, but the strength of your pitch is taken into consideration as well, so concentrate on making it the best you possibly can.12:10PM Apr 22, 2012

So does every single building have to be a specific LEGO City set? Can I use generic buildings in the background? Feedback would be helpful.
Caleb Light-WillsThe focus of this project is on LEGO City, so you should stick with that as much as possible.
12:17AM Apr 22, 2012
Maxwell Bottner
@Caleb Light-Wills
No, I know that, but I mean can I even USE buildings that I built myself in the background? The main focus will obviously be the Lego City buildings, but I want to know if I can just have generic storefronts in the background.8:21AM Apr 22, 2012

@Brandon Lowe
Thanks! They want a minimum of 100 pitches (otherwise they extend the lenth of the pitch phase), so don't get worried by that number going up (until it's over 100).5:09PM Apr 22, 2012

@David Pickett
Actually, if you go to the "requirements" tab and scroll down to number 10, it says, "Minimum 50 Pitches, or the contest will repost for 14 days."9:10PM Apr 22, 2012

In the objectives section of the overview, it says "The focus should be mostly on Police and Fire when doing a mixed theme execution. " Is Forest Police and Forest Fire considered part of Police and Fire?

I have a problem with LEGO mining, it's not included in the major themes, and i can't find it in the products page of LEGO website, but in the assets there are pics of mine workers, to be more specific in my pitch story i would like to use the products: 4201 and 4204.
Do i have to rule them out?
Caleb Light-WillsYou can save the idea for future projects, but mining is out for this one I'm afraid.
4:03PM Apr 18, 2012
Paolo Scippo
@Caleb Light-Wills
that's fine, i can rearrange the idea using the workers included in 4434 Tipper Truck from Great Vehicle :-)4:06PM Apr 18, 2012

@Caleb Light-Wills
i'm sorry to annoy :-) but i'm afraid to put elements taken from the assets that can't be used (other example: 4428, it will be sold from september 2012). Could you tell me which is the actual reference for the Lego sets? the product page from Lego website? :-)4:31PM Apr 18, 2012

Is everything that is included in the asset pictures included in the package that you will receive after winning a pitch? For example the roads, the city buildings, and trains.
Caleb Light-WillsIt depends on which set you are pitching for, but yes, they will be comprehensive.
9:34AM Apr 16, 2012
Jacob Brandman
@Caleb Light-Wills
ok thank you, i have a part in my project where they are walking out side in the forest. Would the back drop for the "wilderness" be provided or would I have to use the green bricks for grass?10:57AM Apr 16, 2012
Caleb Light-Wills@Jacob Brandman
There are a couple of skylines available under the assets tab, do either of those work for what you're trying to create?11:32AM Apr 16, 2012
Jacob Brandman
@Caleb Light-Wills
Well i would need the outer space skyline that is behind the space shuttle, the all dirt terrain in the 4433_prod_cat photo, the background in the 4439_prod_cat photo, and the 4427_prod_cat photo in the assets that were given.3:19PM Apr 16, 2012
Jacob Brandman
@Caleb Light-Wills
Also with the skylines provided would i be able to edit with Photoshop to fit what I need in the background?3:21PM Apr 16, 2012
Caleb Light-Wills@Jacob Brandman
We can definitely get you the space skyline, but since the others are for mining, which is not part of this project, they will not be provided. Also, you will be able to edit the bg in photoshop to suit your needs.9:22PM Apr 16, 2012

Seeing that there are so few Lego sets with buildings in them, can I build some of my own Lego buildings to go along with the sets? Or can I slightly modify the sets that I use? Does every prop have to be a Lego set? Also, do I have to use only Lego sets that are being sold by Lego right now? Help!
Caleb Light-WillsHi John! The idea is to highlight the 2012 LEGO City products. You can add older products or buildings you made as long as the story focuses on the new LEGO City models and they are featured in the video.

What kind of music can we use? There aren't rules on that are there? I mean I would assume no rock or crazy stuff.

Well, it doesn't really say what kind of music but it does say that it can't be copyrighted, unless you get documents from the producer giving you the right to use it.

Can I use Lego City models I built myself using my Lego colection? or must I stick to Lego sets only.
Caleb Light-WillsThe focus of this project is really on these LEGO city models, so the videos should center around those, but you can definitely incorporate your models as background pieces as well!

pls clarify? Objectives page: "Do not use buildings or models that are not part of the L.C. assortment" and "If you use a back drop please make sure that they use the L.C. skyline." Does this mean other Legos are okay for backdrop as long as the LC skyline is behind them and LC models are the focus?

Christopher Pumphrey
to elaborate: there are insufficient Lego City models to form backdrops that would measure up to what the sponsor is asking for--ie, we are to portray Lego City when the only buildings available are a fire and police station, and tell a hero's story with only lowres birdseyeview images from assets?

I would like some clarification as to the rules stating special effects welcome and only using Lego City models. Can I alter the Lego City models using old-school stop motion special effects techniques to increase range of movement, to mimic the range of movement in Lego's official CG shorts?

So my pitch is going to be mostly video, because it is a rather large idea, and it wouldn't do it justice to explain in 500 characters. Would I be able to use the video explaining the pitch as a link to another video I've done, or make a link to a separate video? Thanks in advance!
James DeJulioyes. You actually have the ability to upload a video and storyboards when you submit your Pitch

If I look at the Assets section, there is a file containing very specific LEGO City models. Are these the only models that we are allowed to use? I have many older LEGO City models that I would like to use but the way that I interpret the rules, they would not be allowed in the video. Is that right

I get that you're marketing primarily towards boys, I just think it's sad that you're making girls feel they can't be heroes. Why are you marketing towards boys, anyway? It's just perpetuating gender stereotypes unnecessarily and cutting out half your potential market.
James DeJulio@Elizabeth, we understand where you're coming from, which is why we changed how the details read to make sure that no one feels left out whatsoever or that girls can't be heroes. No one ever, ever would think such a thing. sorry for any confusion. we hope that you participate.

Why is Lego City marketed solely to boys? If your promo image is of a stereotypically 'macho' lego man and all the text focuses on boys / heroes, can you really say you want girls to feel welcome and encouraged to enter?
James DeJulioHi Alison, it's not marketed solely to boys, it's marketed primarily to boys, the same way other toys are marketed primarily towards girls, or other products are marketed towards senior citizens, etc. I hope this helps. Either way, anyone can and should participate if they want, the same way a

"heroes that risk their lives to save ours, the heroes that make sure our city streets and parks are clean and safe, that keep our transportation working safely and reliably, heroes that make the city work, and protect us from crime, danger" I guess woman and girls cant do any of that.
James DeJulioOf course female entrants are welcome! Many women are great Tongalers!!! Sorry for any confusion. Since the goal of this is to create Marketing for LEGO City, a product that is targeted to Boys 5-11, naturally that has to be communicated somewhere.

Please see my comment below - I dont think changing one word in the first line sufficiently addresses the issue considering the chosen image and the phrasing of the rest of the text.10:26AM Apr 03, 2012

You've changed the first line to say 'young person' instead of young boys but what about the accompanying images and remainder of the text?

Please correct your publicity material on the front page to make it clear that female entrants are welcomed as well as BOYS

What does it mean when it says, " Do not use buildings or models that are not part of the LEGO City assortment?" Can I still use my own LEGO creations or does everything have to be from a LEGO set?
Caleb Light-WillsIt means that you need to stick to products found in the LEGO City assortment.

so I can use my own self-made LEGO buildings made with my LEGO collection? can I change my LEGO police station to look a little different that what it was made to be?10:26AM Apr 03, 2012

I changed my picture to a building that I would like to use in my movie. As you can see it is not from a LEGO CITY set but it is my own creation. can I use it in my movie?

I am brand-new, signing up ten minutes ago, thus I don't have any previous submissions...does that disqualify me? What can I do to provide the required link so I can submit a pitch?
James DeJulioThe link can be to a video that you've made on another site, like YouTube or Vimeo. If you don't have one, don't worry! that's what the Wild Cards are for.

@James DeJulio
Would the work have to be something creative? Or it could just be home footage of my own kids explaining w/'imagineering' project?...it's very unprofessional & likely counts against me & if I could do the pitch, assuming I won, I could really use the $500 production money & gear...10:15AM Apr 03, 2012
James DeJulio@Lindsey Jasper the idea is to get some creative assets that LEGO can use in their marketing. The Pitch can be home footage, etc. but the video you produce would need to be a stop motion animation that adheres to the objectives/requirements. does that help?
10:22AM Apr 03, 2012
Lindsey Jasper
@James DeJulio
Yes it does help, I think I have a better chance trying to win the pitch first to get the gear I need; I don't have any stop-animation software nor do I have the current funds to run out and get some...and I would need some new Legos for the specific project.10:31AM Apr 03, 2012
James DeJulio@Lindsey Jasper there are a few stop motion apps for iphones that you can use. If you win the Pitch part of this, you'll be sent the LEGO City themes that you request to make your video.
