A once in a lifetime opportunity...of astronomical proportions…

You’ve heard the rhetoric before, but this time, we really mean it.  Really.   Put it this way, the next Video Project like this that could launch would be in the year 2117.  That's because, on June 5th at 6:09 EDT Venus will begin its 7-hour Transit across our Sun for the last time in our lifetime.  The 2012 Venus Transit represents not only one of the RAREST astronomical events (occurring either 121.5 or 105.5 years apart), but also a historical snapshot of the technology and culture of the times.  So, unless you’ve got some chilly cryonic plans to chase pop flies sometime into the next century with Ted Williams, ahem, better get to work…

NASA will be broadcasting via the web, and TV in HD for the full seven-hour experience and archiving all the materials (videos, images, streams, etc) through sites like Flickr, Twitter and Facebook.  They will be downloading images from their Solar Dynamics Observatory currently in orbit, Astronaut Don Pettit will be taking pictures from the International Space Station, and they have over 500 locations around the world hosting viewing events…in other words, this is a really big deal!

Here’s where you come in: NASA wants you to take all this amazing footage and create Video Time Capsules that tell the story of this Transit to be used as a message to future citizens in 2117 as they get ready to watch the next Venus Transit.

You will be able to check out the NASA TV live stream here on June 5th: http://venustransit.nasa.gov/

The 2012 Venus Transit will also be archived in the following places:

OFFICIAL RULES

The goal of this project is to create a 60 second video that combines provided footage of The 2012 Venus Transit with original footage to tell an original and amazing story. Consider this your opportunity to utilize NASA sanctioned footage in your very own trailer, mash up, animation, short, documentary, mockumentary…anything you want! Just keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is to raise awareness of the historical, educational, and scientific purpose of this last Venus Transit of our lifetime and to document, visually, this snapshot in time, in order to provide perspective on what it was like to see it on earth in 2012.

--Target Audience: The general public, including kids, so no offensive content or imagery-real or implied. No political statements. NASA executes Congressional laws recommended by the President and, as such, is apolitical.

--Exposure: The best Time Capsules will be shown to citizens of Earth in 2117 as they get ready to view the next Venus Transit.  In the meantime, NASA will broadcast them at museums, science centers, and visitor centers around the world, in addition to cable TV and the web.

This project will be worth a total of $20,000 and will consist of one phase.

PHASE 1: VIDEO – Create a 60 second video that combines provided footage of The 2012 Venus Transit with original footage to create a visual record of the 2012 Venus Transit that will help change our worldview. NASA sees this as an opportunity to better understand the “system” of our Solar System, experience the wonders of our world, and feel a deeper connection to Transit viewers-past, present and future so create something that will stand the test of time—something that tells future citizens what it was like to be on Earth and view the 2012 Venus Transit.
